Dead money is dead. It's not resurrected by keeping Zeke for another year. All you can do with dead money is kick the can down the road. Kicking the can down the road at the cost of throwing good money after bad onto the pile of cumulative payout is just wasting more money.
If we don't keep Zeke this year, we save the 10.9mil salary we don't pay him in cumulative future cap hit. You save money you don't spend.
If we want to push cap hit from this year into the future, we should kick the cap hit down the road of players we plan to keep this year.
Actually, that’s not entirely accurate. If Zeke takes a pay cut this year, another year of his pro-rated cap is “used up” and there is no acceleration of the pro-rated part of his SB.
I know what you are saying, but it’s not technically “dead money” if he is on the roster. His true “dead money” (when cut or traded) drops with each passing year of his contract —assuming no more restructuring.
But you are correct that the prorated money has to be accounted for either by keeping him on the roster or “eating it” as dead money. So you are spot on regarding that point.
