I wanted to see how DEs stacked up against CBs who were drafted in top 5. The results were surprising in that only 1 CB has been taken in top 5 in past 12 drafts (Patrick Peterson). The other thing that took me back was moderate fail rate on DE taken in top 5 (with Watt being glaring exception). Here are results:
DE taken in top 5:
2014 - Jadeveon Clowney (4.5 sacks best year)
2013 - Dion Jordon (2 sacks best year)
2013 - Ezekiel Ansah (first double-digit sack year in 2015)
2011- JJ Watt (freak)
2009 - Tyson Jackson (4 sacks best year)
2008- Chris Long (two double-digit sack years)
2007- Gaines Adams (6.5 best year)
CB taken top 5:
2011 - Patrick Peterson (dynamic)
2003- Terence Newman (long steady career but not elite)
Another time I will take look at comparing Bosa (DE) & Ramsey (CB/S) to past top 5 picks to see if we can find baseline comparisons.
