Lets compare SOLBs

I think Spencer is a "good" but not "great" OLB.

If the Cowboys had a chance to get someone better, I would support the move, but I wouldn't diss them staying with Spencer either.

You sir have "hit the nail on the head".

I agree with this, If we have a chance to upgrade then by all means.

No way do you put the franchise tender on a guy like Spencer.

Just let him walk and spend a 1st or 2nd rounder for an immediate starter from the college ranks. This is probably the better option anyway.

and if that draft pick turns into Vernnon Golhston, Maybin, Currey, Egnlish or Carpenter, then you in a much deeper problem.

That is not there only job, go look at what the Steelers DE's have averaged or the Patriots.

Most DE in the a 3/4 average 4 sacks a year we get about 1.5 so yeah that position is in need of a bigger upgrade because Spencer is about average at his position.

The patriots moved to a 4-3 this year they are not running a 3-4 which is why they went after fat albert

Oh and Dallas has 3 sacks from it's de which is on pace for what we expect a year from a de

hatcher 2 and spears 1

Pitsburg de have 4.5 total 3 from keisel 1 from haywood and a .5 with hood so as you where saying

They're running a 4-3, but with the exception of Haynesworth, it's still a 2-gap system. Besides, when they were running a true 3-4, they had DE's (Seymour, Warren) who could get to the QB.

Our scheme calls for a SOLB who is solid against the run and in protection. Others call for it to be more of a pass rusher. You don't find both that often. You could argue that Woodley and Matthews are good at both, but then again Pitt and GB have DL that can get to the QB (I think I just overdid it with the abbreviations). And that's only two teams. Hard to find SOLB's that excel in everything.

Bottom line: Barring another team making a ridiculous offer, I think they sign Spencer to another deal.

I like Hatcher at DE and I think Ratliff needs to be moved to DE because I think he can add more value at DE than NT. I would also love to add Calais Campbell who is a 3-4 DE with 5 sacks. Get a big true NT and have a DL rotation of Ratliff, new NT, Campbell; Spears, Brent, Hatcher.

If we let Spencer walk then we will have to draft one early and find a veteran
in case the draft pick doesn't pick up on the system or is a bust.

I agree, I think Spencer will see a new deal, if he gets a ridiculous offer then let him walk.

I think Burfict can play SOLB. And Hostile seems to believe that Carter can play that spot as well.

Rob Ryan does insist on the versatility of his Front 7, especially the LBs. I can see a combo of Albright & Butler starting at SOLB as well. Albright on early downs and Butler on passing downs.

I would rather use the money on OL or DL upgrades than retain Spencer. If Erik Walden can start for the Packers, then let's not pay big money for mediocrity.

Erik Walden plays WOLB which all he does is rush the passer on every down in the packers defense.
But I do agree, with everything you said. I would much rather focus on DL and OL and then offer Spencer a good fair contract. Dallas still needs to resign Spencer, Elam, and Robinson, then go after a NT, Campbell, and either Nicks or Grubbs.
Right now there is no telling what Dallas is going to do, thas why mock drats right now is pointless.
I also think Burfict can play SOLB, I actually think thats what his true position is in the NFL. Watching him play he just doesn't look like a true ILB.

and that's the tricky part. we could spend a first on a DE/OLB, but that's also a first that could've been spent else where. then what do we do if he isn't as good as Spencer?

but we already have a good player there, thus there isn't a ton of room for impovement

You have to decide if the cost in salary is commensurate with the performance you get.

I wouldn't pay Pro Bowler dollars for a non-Pro Bowl player. I wouldn't pay Spencer more than $5-6M/year. We know what he is and we know what he is not by now. He will never be a good pass rusher. Most of his sacks are of the garbage variety - unblocked, QB runs into him from pressure generated elsewhere or coverage sack. He has no moves, minimal power on the bull rush and does not have the burst to turn the corner.

I agree he is an okay player in coverage and run support but players like that are a dime a dozen in this league and not worth a premium salary.

If we do bring him back for a moderate salary we need to bring in another pass rusher to take this defense up a notch. I don't care if that player is drafted or a FA pickup. I don't care if the player is a 4-3 DE, a 3-4 DE or a 4-3 DT type player as we can use a player that plays any of those positions so long as he can hunt down QBs. The Giants have four guys who fit this description and all of them are basically 4-3 DEs. They put them all out there in passing downs and get after the QB with great efficacy.

why not give butler a shot at the starting SOLB position. He has been here for a couple years. He seems to do good when giving a chance. I heard he works hard. Wasn't he like a 4th round draft pick? Lets give him a chance.

I'd prefer to draft a young player with potential and upside for about $2 million per year than to spend $7 million plus for average, to say nothing of what effort Spencer will give once he gets big guaranteed money.

This, this and this.

So for some reason you think us having 3 total sacks by are De's equate to each DE from other good 3/4 teams averaging between 4-6?

And what NE changing to a 4-3 have to do with this conversation I will never know.

Do you watch the games?

He is getting plenty of snaps and has shown to be a liability in the running game.

He is getting evry chance to show if he deserves the position full time.
