Let's cut Dez

It seems to be a suggestion/plan that keeps gaining steam with some around here. I don't get it but let's explore it.

For starters, let's look at the cap implications. If you cut him in the 2018 league year, you take an $8MM dead cap hit but save $8.5MM. If you make him a June 1 designee, that's $4MM in dead money and $12.5MM in cap savings. More than likely, they would want the cap savings immediately because they will have holes to fill in FA.

Now let's look at roster implications.

Bryant is gone. Who is your #1 WR? The answer seems to be "Oh, just draft your new #1". This logic is folly on a few levels. For one, few WRs come in and immediately plant their flag as a legit #1 WR. Second, this isn't a strong draft in terms of WRs to begin with. There is no Calvin Johnson, Julio Jones, AJ Green, Dez Bryant type in this draft.

Oh, maybe we can just sign a FA WR. OK...... here are the Top 3 WRs in free agency - Pryor, Wallace and Watkins. Any of those three strike you as legit #1s? Maybe Pryor with his upside but he's going to cost you and eat up whatever cap savings you had with cutting Bryant. And are you really better off with Pryor over Bryant? This might work IF you could get Pryor on a one year deal like Washington has. Little risk in that if he doesn't improve you have no long term implications but I am not sure he makes you better than if you had Bryant.

So I am fascinated by this cut Dez talk. I truly would love to see the plan some of you have come up with that involves cutting Dez and yet still improving the WR corps.
Jarvis Landry. Close thread!

We wouldn't need a great receiver to replace Dez's production per attempt. He's not even played like a top-20 receiver. The team's offense was outstanding in his absence last season.

Maybe there isn't a top-5 receiver in the draft, FA or via trade. That's fine. Don't over-draft one.

Add a couple of viable threats...get a top tight end, a receiver or two later in the draft

Look at coaching and play calling. Maybe, just maybe this has a lot to do with it.

When the Cowboys do eventually replace Dez, it will likely be along the same way that most starters find the bench as a Cowboy; either gradually, with a high draft pick slowly but surely stealing reps or (the more likely end in the Jason Garrett era) via Wally Pipp, which is another way of saying Dez will have to be injured and then outplayed on a level warranting the move.

I'll be honest. Some of you are making some pretty solid points.

There is the possibility in the midst of an hour some of you can sway my opinion.

Seems that #1 WR we don't have came up big in NY and refunded after those 2 drops, if they were true drops.

He had 1 great play. Probably the only one of the season. Let's not act like he was a force out there. He is getting the highest base salary of any wide receiver in the league. We can all agree that his production doesn't match the resources allocated to him.

IF they were true drops? IF? One of the balls hit him in the face! How is that not a true drop?

if making Dez a June 1 cut in fact translates to $12.5M in cap savings and only $4M in dead cap, I'm sorry (ban or ignore me) but he has to go or his contract MUST be renegotiated.
Stephen is the logical side of the FO. I think he clearly sees that Dez's play isn't worthy of his salary. Stephen isn't afraid to play hard ball

Not many players meet the production of their performance, on most teams.....it is the way of the NFL...And he did make a few other key catches, not all, not many will be 50 yards or more. But if he catches a 5 yarder and gives us a 1st down. And it keeps the drive alive to get a TD...no matter who gets the TD...then that is production.

just because the coaches won't call deep passes for him every play, you all think he sucks.
Should he have more yards, catches, yes. But it is not all on Dez.

So many hate on Dez posts....this place is...well, amazing and not in a good way amazing...or I should say some fans, then more pile on because they think it is the "cool" thing to do.

Some may consider it "cool", while others consider it reality.

We don't view the Cowboys organization through rose colored glasses. Pointing out flaws doesn't make anybody less of a "fan".

The Cowboys aren't going to win the Super Bowl this season. That statement in itself would cause some here to think I'm just a hater and not a true fan. It's unbelievable.

Lets let the season play out before we get into hypotheticals about what we should or should not do. I do think Dez is dropping passes he never dropped in the past. I also think that Dak doesn't throw him open worth a damn. They certainly don't always appear to be on the same page this year.

agreed....I think too many are allowing drama to override logic when it comes to Dez and Witten. Yes, they are Cowboy "legends" but in the salary cap era, value needs to be a large data point in roster/cap management.

You can't on one hand hold JJ & the FO accountable for lack of post season success but then give them flack for not being loyal to team legends even if at the team's cap detriment

I'd give this more than one like if I could!

My argument is that he is no where near what you would call a #1 WR in the league anymore. I agree, it isn't all on Dez. It is a confluence of factors. Playcalling, QB, etc, but the fact remains that he isn't a #1 WR.

I didn't say you weren't a true fan, and yes this team has many flaws. I pointed them out myself. Coaching is the biggest flaw.
And you are most likely right, no SB, probably not even the playoffs. But the constant dumping on players when it makes no sense to get rid of them is as wishful thinking as winning the SB.

I think you omitted a pretty good option in Davonte Adams.

He continues to improve and is far outpacing Dez Bryant right now, despite losing arguably the best quarterback in the league.

He's still very young too.

Fair enough. I guess I read too much into your original post. All good, man.

I don't think many, if any, are foolish enough to "think he sucks" or that it is "all on Dez".

But the fact is that the team isn't getting close to the return on investment for the contract. And when that happens, any organization would at least consider doing something to change it.
