I have been doing lots of mock drafts just for fun. That doesn’t make me a GM, but it did make me consider exactly what the team needs are and how I might go about fixing them, and how Dallas might look at the situation from a different standpoint than I do.

I think we can all agree that the defensive team needs are probably: linebackers (generally-inside and outside/edge) and probably DT next.

It seems to me that there are a LOT of linebackers in this class that could really help us even until later in the draft (5th or 6th round) provided that they are not the first linebacker taken that late and that they are not primarily edge rushers.

On the edge rusher front there seem to be less than 10 (maybe less than 7) that would satisfactorily function as our first edge rusher taken.

DT seems to be shallower than the linebacker class, BUT much deeper than the contributing edge class. Running mocks it seems like the contributing edge class runs out before the end of the second round.

Let’s say that Dallas takes an edge at 12 or 20 or in a trade back) (Bain, Mesidore, Howell, Thomas). I am assuming in this defense that’s an outside linebacker/edges/3rd down edge in pass rushing situations) and would “count” generally as a linebacker in this system.

If you were in Dallas shoes, in a trade back scenario, would you double dip and take a second edge rusher (or even a third if Bain somehow fell to 12) over the first true off ball linebacker that you took off the board (Hill, Rodrigues, Golday, Trotter.

Second scenario. Looks in a trade down scenario that Dallas may be given a choice between a falling top tier DT, edge or off ball linebacker at around #40 in a trade back scenario. Which one are you taking?

We need ILB.

A Mike linebacker first and foremost. Followed by another linebacker and a corner with a DE mixed in somewhere.

We need ILB.
We definitely want a STUD at MLB. But here’s a question that will dictate how we go about filling team needs. Would the Cowboys view a player like Tarean York/Elarms-Orr/Perkins caliber to be a sufficient player to fill that hole?

Or will the Cowboys opt for a Rodriquez/Hill/ Trotter/ type of player as the bare minimum to adequately fill the position?

Are the Cowboys willing to go York/Elarms/Orr/Perkins if they can add an edge in the Howell/Thomas tier as an earlier pick. My preference is trade down from 12 and 20 and get BOTH of higher tier players.

Probably the ideal situation if we are staying and selecting at #12 is Bain or Styles. Downs is a home run there at 12 too, but the issue is that linebacker and edge are huge needs.

The better edge players are likely gone by the middle or end of round 2. You can get a really solid safety in the 3rd or 4th round. That will not be likely true at edge.

It would flip people out but don’t be surprised if the Cowboys trade away from Delane or Downs at #12 if they are on the board. Both Delane and Downs players will be first round graded players, but it might be possible that the Cowboys move around to get maximum impact from multiple picks.

You are going to see the Cowboys almost force a pick at EDGE at 12 or 20 unless the Cowboys down.

If the Cowboys move down from both 12 and 20 they can add an impact edge, impact ILB and an impact DT with their first three picks and get another legitimate impact defender with their 4th pick.

Still need a much better Safety then we have so far; and our need at LB is still the worst
DT is really not that much of a need
we do need another pass rusher; I am still hopeful we bring back clowney.

I have no confidence that the Front Office is competent enough to trade down and get really top players. Yet I would not be opposed to it. IF Downs or a couple others are not available at 12, which is certainly possible, then a trade down would be the best thing to happen. Unfortunately this is a bad draft at the top; and a trade down requires a partner unless you basically all but give it away.

There will be at least 4 really good safeties available at 92 and possibly even at 112.

There will likely be a couple of teams that will want to trade and will pay for it.

We need a starting ILB and a second as depth.
We need a starting Edge
We need a starting CB
We need a Starting NT to allow Clark to focus on DE and allow Otito to be the backup
We need a backup DE to spell Williams and Clark
We need a change of pace back to be the lighting to Williams thunder
We need an OT to backup Guyton and Steele
We need a TE to challenge Ferguson as he appears to be losing steam.
I personally would love another safety to replace Hooker.

So that is 10 players. We’re almost there or as Shotty would say we are set up to go BPA in the draft.

I appreciate the last paragraph of sarcasm. Well played.

I believe that with trade downs at 12 and 20 most of those needs can be met. IDK about this TE class. I’m not saying we don’t need one. I just don’t know much about them.

I hate this because then people say "we shouldn't reach" or the Cowboys says we're not going to reach, well we have needs damn near everywhere on defense, we're going to take someone!!!
