I know we are only two games in, but here is something interesting I found today.

Cowboys rank #1, tied with NE, Det, and Phi, in points allowed in the 1st quarter with an avg. of 0 points per first quarter of play. Then, they drop all the way down and are ranked 29th in points allowed in the 2nd quarter with an avg. of 11.5 . From there they are 20th in the 3rd with 6.5 pts , and back up to 6th in the 4th only 3.5.

So what are we doing so much more differently in the 1st and 4th quarters? Starting off fresh and then quickly fading could prove a lot of things. Are we being more conservative in the middle two quarters with the defensive play calls? Does it all hinge upon the offense, and the long first quarter drives? What do y'all think???

Have at it...

The answer is a lot simpler than you think.

We've received both games, with opponents averaging 1 possession in the first quarter.

You answered it yourself in the last bit. They receive, 14 plays later the opponent gets the ball and if they don't score in that possession or have a high play drive, that's probably going to get the game into the 2nd quarter already.

Small sample sizes make stats worthless.

Most stats are quoted as if they're earned in a vacuum with no other circumstances, either. That never happens. No stat can tell the whole story.

LOL it means the Commanders quarterback can't hit the broadside of a barn or this stat would be totally different

We received the ball first in both games. Ate up a lot of clock only to settle for a field goal.

That was quick and easy. When you hold the ball almost the entire first quarter and then play a bend but don't break defense it takes the other team into the second quarter to get into scoring position.
