I like Garrett. I'm glad he is in Dallas. If this was a perfect world then in about 2-4 years he would be the next head coach of the Cowboys.
But, let's stop acting like he is that important or that if he moves on that it will be such a huge ordeal.
Let's look at some facts...
1) Last year we averaged more points than all but 3 other teams in the NFL. Last year we averaged more yards per game than all but 4 teams in the NFL.
2) Last year we were coached by a VERY conservative coach who had his hand in every aspect of the game. He did not let Sparano ever play the type of offensive game we are playing this year. Last year it was play to keep the game close and then pull it out at the end.
3) Last year Romo had never started a game. This year he has a lot more experience and an offseason as the starte under his belt.
4) Last year T.O. was a distraction and a mess, mostly thanks to our head coach treating him like crap. This year, he is the ideal teammate and a huge playmaker.
5) Last year our offensive line was average at best. Our LG was new to the team, our RG changed throughout the season and was not good. Our RT was starting for the first time and years and was still getting his strength back. This year, our LT and LG and our C are all familiar with each other. Our RG is a huge new addition to the team and is back to playing his natural position and our RT has a year of starting under his belt and is much more confident.
6) This year we have yet to play any team with a defensive ranking above 15.
So, again, I like Garrett and I hope he stays around. But, I don't think he is the saviour of this franchise and I don't think we would be lost without him.
Parcells left and we became more aggressive. Romo got a year of experience under his belt. We got a better offensive line. T.O. is happy and playing great. Witten has gotten more involved. Lots of things have gone right this year so far. Not all of it is because of Garrett.
Plus, I really hate to see everyone ignore the impact of Sparano. He led the offense last year and it was pretty darn good, even with Parcells making sure it was conservative as heck.
