First off, I want to say it has played at a very high level so far. I think it's a top 10 defense overall. Could end up higher or lower than that as the picture gets a little clearer.
I try not to get too high or too low and look at things objectively. The team has held two good teams in check on the scoreboard and that's the most important thing. If they hadn't failed to account for Cam maybe we would be 2 and 0 right now, even though the loss wasn't on the defense.
Here's the other side of the coin. Neither offense was very good on the OL. Seattle also appears to be somewhat compromised on the OL so I expect the defense to have another good game on Sunday.
On the other hand I saw all the sacks we had in the second game in another thread and it showed how putrid the Giants OL played and for whatever reason Eli never made us pay for a blitz, which is unusual.
There really weren't that many true beat your man plays that resulted in a sack in the Giants game. That's a bit troubling.
The question I have (and I'm not sure there is a difinitive answer to it at this point) is have we improved so much schematically that these waves sacks are sustainable? Something tells me that the sack result COULD look a lot different against a good OL. Obviously I am hoping we continue the trend.
I absolutely hated seeing us go to prevent defense against the Giants. It was far too easy for the Giants to score once we went to it. I hope they keep that in mind going forward.
Something is seriously wrong with Lee. Anyone who is reasonably objective has to be able to see it. The Giants tried to target him specifically. Let that sink in for a minute. That would never have been the case in prior years.
It's good to see the young linebackers step up. Wilson is playing at a much higher level than years past. So are the reserve linebackers. Do we finally have LB talent, or, is it coaching, or both? This is the most LB depth I have ever seen for the Cowboys.
The corners are pressing successfully. That's really the key to this defense remaining dominant. The receivers aren't open as soon as the ball is snapped and that's posing a problem for opposing teams.
Eli is normally VERY hard to sack because he doesn't hold the ball very long. I knew the Giants OL was a sieve, but I had no idea we would get that many sacks.
One last thing: I love this Cowboys run defense. We are doing great at shutting down the run. We just can't allow Russell Wilson to run free like Cam did. That's the XFactor in this game.
