Let's talk about culture, Schotty's version vs reality

In all fairness to Mike the stupid Owner landed a helicopter on the practice field last season for crying out loud!
And as soon as players even just seem to defer to Schottenheimer Jerry will emphasize and remind all of his authority. He will not stand aside while another man seems to be the reason for the team’s success. No amount of Johnnie Walker Blue can drown his ego. It’s sad, but true.

The thing that surprises me the most around here is some seeming to not understand why many others are frustrated and want to vent over it.
Exactly. As if we should have hope and be optimistic, after all these years of not even sniffing an NFC Championship Game. Blind faith would make this Cowboy Fandom culture a cult.

Hey, wait a minute...

Any smoldering embers of hope I had left were snuffed out when Jerry re-signed Dak, making him the highest paid QB in the NFL.

As you can see, team culture can have different meanings for different teams, but the common denominator is unity focused on winning. I think Schotty is trying to build it within the locker room, which frankly had no leaders last season. For example
Cowboys leaders from the 90s...... Haley, Woodson. Aikman, Emmit, Irvin, Allen, Newton

Cowboy leaders from last season
Dak......highest paid player in the league, missed most of the season on IR. This is after playing the worst few games of his career.
Martin......worst season of his career before retiring
Lamb.......????
Tyler........
Parsons....... has maturity issues. Ugly jawing with DLaw on social media. Interestingly, he was the only defensive player.

Keep in mind, Schotty was on this team last season, so he witnessed firsthand the lack of leadership and unity. He saw a team of players more worried about covering their own a_____, not helping teammates or sacrificing for the good of winning. I hate to say this about Dak but with his contract ( highest paid ) and how last season went down, I'm not sure how respect he has in the locker room. 4-5 years ago, many players and FO's people didn't hide their confidence he would get them to the promised land. How many times have we heard his name this offseason from players and coaches?

Here's Mike Vrabel's version of team culture

Belichick's version

AI on NFL team culture

NFL team culture encompasses the shared beliefs, values, and behaviors that define a team's identity and how it operates. It's a crucial element for building a winning and cohesive environment, impacting everything from player performance to fan engagemen

Blah, blah goes the coach. Paintball today, maybe tomorrow go-carts. Anybody for rock climbing?
This coach Scotty is way over his head.
A wiser man would come in and quietly begin the implementation of a new culture and team building without fanfare.

His locker assignments and paintball are just "look at me" stunts when he should be doing football sheet.
Blimey!
Does Schotty want to be popular or effective?
He screams New Day. The players are thinking this will be another cupcake coach who is fun but not to be feared.

The players know who to run too...if they get spanked.

It would seem Jerry drinks jwb like some people breath air. :):muttley:

It appears you are talking about discipline culture, similar to what Vrabel mentions above. I'm not sure that's the culture Schotty is building. I think he is trying to build a core of players to strengthen the leadership in the locker room. Similar to the '90s players mentioned above.

BTW........Jerry was also around during the 90s version of culture and that worked out pretty good. IMO, it's more about a small group of well-respected players who will hold other players accountable.
I suspect he was so busy trying to keep his investment afloat that he has very little to do with the day to day behaviour and influence on the team.

I would also like to see Turpin used on offense a bit more this season as well. I think that is where his best year yet can thrive.

Just get him the ball in space and let him go to work. With George Pickens and CeeDee Lamb now, he should get a lot of favorable matchups if they line him out wide.

This is actually too dynamic to ignore. Even with electric cars running around and car industry protests and need for aluminum at Ford and air industry.

That is respect also...proven helpful over time and player real needs in sport.

Will this help over come some of the culture from last season?

Hooker was recently ranked as a top 20 safety in the NFL by PFF’s Zoltan Buday—further proving his value to the Cowboys. Buday ranked the top 32 players at the safety position but noted Hooker declined in 2024.

"Following two strong seasons in which he ranked among the top 15 safeties in PFF overall grade, Hooker’s play declined this past season. The Ohio State product’s 65.3 PFF overall grade ranked only 42nd at the position. However, over the previous two seasons, he combined to allow just 19 receptions and three touchdowns in coverage,” Buday wrote.

With Matt Eberflus now in the fold as the new defensive coordinator in Dallas, Hooker will be in a system he is familiar with—one that will hopefully allow him to tap into his early career success. ... as he pushes on with good health.

Corporate culture is set from the top and flows down. This is still Jerry world and that’s not going to change. This is just the latest hype.

Well, it all seems good, but we'll find out the first time we get punched in the mouth.

I cant say this with the most confidence BUT... to me, it seems that MM wanted the players to LIKE him and they did, for the most part. With Schotty, its starting to look like they RESPECT him. Big difference.
