I may be in the minority but I find it pretty interesting at the number of DEs on this roster that actually have a chance to stick and wonder if it is telling us something that we haven't figured out yet. Let's go through them:

1. Lawrence. (Certain lock unless traded)
2. Taco. (Based on draft position only you would assume he is a lock. What is not certain is if they will use him exclusively at DE or kick him inside)
3. Gregory. Feel good story. ( Based on us keeping him around, draft position and reputation he could be a lock, although his antics make it more questionable)
4. Crawford. Slimmed down to play DE. Contract indicates he is either a significant contributor/starter or gone.
5. Tapper. Reportedly had the weak side starting end spot locked up prior to injury. Speedy. Fastest end on the roster.
6. Dorance Armstrong. 4th round pick. You would think that we wouldn't have used a 4th rounder on this guy unless he's going to make the 53. We already knew how many ends we had prior to drafting him.
7. Ealy. High drat pick who hasn't found his groove prior to being picked up by the Cowboys.
8. Irving. Part time end who is suspended.

That's 8 ends. Too many to keep, or is it? Irving will be suspended so he won't count on the 53, although I'm not sure he if he has to make the 53 before he goes to the suspended list.

I'm thinking I'm missing one or two other ends but they are the main participants.

The club's strategy in large part probably depends on whether they plan on keeping Lawrence around or parting with him via trade in the offseason. It also depends on how many DTs they plan on keeping around. They could go really light at DT early on if they chose to. But you have to have guys who can play inside.

With Marinelli's preference for lighter DT's could they play Taco almost exclusively inside during Irving's absence and Collin's injury rehab? It would enable them to go long at DE if they have several they want to keep and hedge their bets on Lawrence next year.

Crawford had inside flexibility but ideally he is really to light to play inside at this point.

If one or more of these guys busts out or gets injured. (Tapper -injury history) (Ealy- prior bust) it makes their decision easier. On the other hand if they all pan out they are going to have a lot of competent ends.

They could trade one or two if they choose to assuming they can find a trade partner. I have belief that the team will desperately want to hedge their bets on Lawrence and not get held hostage.

The problematic part of that theory is that:

1. Tapper has injury history
2. Irving has suspension history
3. Gregory has suspension history.

If healthy Tapper is the least risky of those 3 guys.

Who may be around next year will likely factor into the roster composition of the position. I sort of think we will go a bit longer than normal at the position. The team really has a lot to consider when compiling the 53 as it pertains to DE.

All this talent at DE and the refusal to prioritize DTs may indicare they will go light at DT and maybe kick a player or two inside in the mean time.

Irving was a DT last season with only a handful of snaps at DE.

Despite the weight loss, Crawford may be needed as at DT with Irving out which could end up bring all season.

That puts the list at 6.

They'll carry 5, maybe 6 DEs.

It probably comes down to Tapper vs Ealy.

this is the position I can't wait to watch beginning August 9th in san fran.
gonna be a real battle.
I still think Taco has a break-out season...we'll see...year 2...its up to him.
Dorance Armstrong intrigues me.
as a Sooner fan,Id like to see Tapp put it together.
Im in the minority but I like Crawford...like his versatility to move up and down the line, handles his business, good leader....dont like his contract but I like him.
Gregory,Ealy,Tapper....those are the wild-cards...its a interesting group.
Beyond DLaw,Taco and Crawford...I have no idea who or how...just cant wait to watch it unfold.

Offenses are becoming more college like with immediate throws, which could make defensive ends obsolete as pass rushers.

I hope the get Gregory in there practicing soon. As I think the final spot may come down to Gregory, Tapper and Ealy. Or very possibly 2 of the 3.
Much depends on Tapper's health. Ealy is on a one year contract, and I don't think it hurts the cap if he is released.
Gregory and Tapper still have a few years on their contract left.

I did not like the Armstrong pick. They did not need a De, they need a DT or S. As it has proven out for sure. Frazier is out, and Irving and Collins is out. But yet they still have not addressed these issues. They always seem to ignore some areas every year. Frustrating as it is, maybe they feel comfortable as they are supposed to know better than fans. but that has been questionable . LOL.

I felt Crawford should have stayed inside, not outside. Yet they keep moving him around, and I think that hurts him. Coaches trying to out smart everyone again. So far it has not worked. Maybe it dos this year.

And I will not get hyped up when Armstrong gets his 3 sacks against 3rd and 4th team guys in the 3rd and 4th quarters either.

Lawrence takes one side, and a combination of Gregory, Crawford, and Taco. That group is strong against the run as well as can create hurries and sacks.

Armstrong and Ealy will see package time as well.

Irving has to first see if he is even going to be a player this season...

I know this is a family site and profanity will get you benched but at least half of our defensive ends have...
wait for it...
Position Flex:omg:

I’m fine going long at end cause several of them will see time inside in passing downs. Crawford, Ealy and Taco will all gets snaps at tackle at some point

I didn't like the Armstrong pick at all for the same reasons you didn't, but that pick gives us information. We didn't "need" to draft Armstrong but we drafted him anyway, so we can surmise from that that either 1. The player was so good that we completely ignored the fact we have a glut of players at the position, 2. We have a greater "need" than we think we do because the Cowboys may potentially be moving onnfrom Lawrence, or 3. The staff has no idea what they are doing. I would hope it's not #3.

I am probably in the minority, but I think Ealy is the least likely player to make this roster unless the positiiin gets thin for health reasons. He has had several stops and hasn't turned out to be a player yet, and he is on a one year contract. If he has a decent year he will want to get paid.

We have Tapper locked up cheap and he may be restricted (not sure) because he missed time. If he pans out (and he was reported to have won the starting job before injuries derailed him) you would think the talent is still there. He has lots of speed. He could be a factor even though many have written him off. Think Jimmy Smith.

I think we will go at least one long and maybe two long at DE because of Gregory's prior unavailability. You can't count on him for multiple reasons. He needs to show something to get a roster spot. But the team seems committed to giving him a spot.

While they are probably going to GIVE Gregory a spot no matter what, they can't count on him (and they may trade Lawrence at some point) so they should keep an extra body at DE.

They will have to go short somewhere to make up for that. I think they will go short at tight end and may go really short at tight end if forced to. Two of the current 4 could probably make it to the practice squad unclaimed.

Find a team with a need for DE depth (Seattle) and swap them Tapper/Ealy and a 4th for a guy who doesn't want to play there anymore...

They will get a 3rd round compensatory pick when he walks next year. They have that in their back pocket. I'm all for making that trade for Ealy. The issue is how much ET is going to want to get paid. Probably too much.

This topic has been my hot button all off season. We are very deep at DE and super thin at DT. They will have to keep extra ends to play inside at tackle. (Sorry Crawford, back inside you go) That could end up being the Achilles heal of this defense. Teams will just start pounding the ball at our middle. They can double team or chip the ends wide and single up on the DT's giving their qbs tons of time, putting tons of pressure on our DB's. The D wont be able to get off the field.

6 DEs carried on the 53 - Lawrence, Charlton, Crawford, Armstrong, Tapper, Gregory.

Ealy needs to pick it up or he's the odd man out.

How is Gregory a "feel good" story?? He overcame his penchant for self-sabotage? For deciding that he perhaps owed a few games to the team that paid him millions while all he's given in return are failed drug tests?

That dude is just lucky Jerry Jones spent a second round pick on him or he'd be looking for a job in Canada.

Think outside of HURST, Armstrong was clearly the best player available in the 4th. Reports were they tried to move back into the 3rd for him. Believe fans are overeating these Des. Crawford is limited, Taco is still an unknown, Gregory has a lot to prove he's dependable, Tapper's pars defect can end his career at any moment, and Ealy has seemed to regress! Not sure where the Tapper would have been starter rumer is coming from. He was criticized fairly regularly as not having any pass moves last preseason and was the #4 in the only game he played in last season.

Eh, I bet it's more Tapper vs. Armstrong. Both of them would fill the same role - depth backup weakside passrusher i.e. Mayowa.

1 - Lawrence 2 - Taco 3 - Crawford 4 - Gregory 5 - Ealy 6 - Tapper/Armstrong

I think it's possible that they keep 7 and just consider Crawford a full-time tackle, at least early on.
