Linebacker poses challenges and potential

We have a lot going on at linebacker that could potentially be very good.

With both Marinelli and Garrett staying, my take was that McClain would want to return. I don't think any team is going to bring out the checkbook for McClain.

Surprisingly the highest paid of these free agent linebackers could be Carter. He turned a lot of games around with turnovers, even though he was pretty inconsistent for us. Can we afford to bring him back as a strong side linebacker? That's pretty questionable.

Durant was heralded as our best defensive player in training camp next to Scandrick this year after Lee went down with an injury. I have to say that I think it's pretty clear that Durant will be able to come back at a reasonable rate. I don't think he did anything to make teams really shell out for him.

Hitchens is a player that we all have to have a lot of hope for going towards the future, but the question would be do you have him come in primarily as a backup next year? Or do you get him starter reps?

That brings us down to Sean Lee, our best player on defense, which shouldn't be forgotten. I think moving him to will could be really good for him, though around this team last year I was saying the same for Carter, thinking that would be a natural position for him.

It really comes down to having your best players back next year. So this is my plan not based on where the players will play in the scheme but the fact that we want them back.

1. Sean Lee
2. Rolando McClain
3. Bruce Carter
4. Justin Durant
5. Anthony Hitchens
6. Kyle Wilber

With injuries and different packages, I really think linebacker could be a strength for this team. So yes, I would say let's bring everyone back within reason. You improve the defensive line, and you'll see the linebackers improve even more. I think the hardest one to bring back will be Carter, but I don't think that's a HUGE deal.

I think you sign Durant to a 2 or 3 year deal. McClain I'd try to get for 1 or 2 years depending on price. Carter would be a 3 or 4 year deal. This gives us the flexibility to promote Hitchens when the time comes, and does keep us attached to anyone long term.

I don't see how any one can rely on Lee. McClain a close second. Maybe with a full off season McClain can get right but Lee?

Where did I say to rely on him. I specifically said we should bring everyone back, especially because of injury concerns.

I don't know that Carter comes back. I think the staff questioned his effort at times and may want to go in another direction. Will be interesting to see if they offer him a contract or just let him walk.

The way I see it is : Bruce Carter is the one that will cost the most but is also the one that has shown the most lack of effort . For this reason see you later Bruce .

Durant and McClain could resign for relatively cheap. Keep in mind folks out there know McClains history and they won't pay big money for him. He loves it here and that's why he stays.

Lee wont be back to full strength at the beginning of the season, they say it is usually in yr 2 to be fully back. Carter the light seems to have come on in the last 5-6 games, can we let other teams make an offer and attempt to match or is he 100% FA? McClain...Love him at 100%, but how is the knee and what about his concussions? Yr 2 for McClain would give him a full offseason to get into football shape unlike this yr. Durrant comes back relatively cheaply. Wilbur...no idea on him. Hitchens is definitely a fulltime starter, turned in many big plays this yr. We have some good problems to deal with. Now we just need another pass rushing DE or monster DT that can push the pocket.

Lee and Hitchens are locks

After that it's whoever comes cheaply

I would re-sign any or all of Durant, McClain and Carter

It seems reasonable to speculate the team will try to bring back McClain at Mike and move Lee to Will. This scheme doesn't place a high value on Sam LBs, so I'd imagine they will make an offer to Durant or Carter and go with whomever comes cheapest -- although the coaching staff has always seemed to favor Durant. After that you probably roll with Hitchens, Wilber, and possibly a mid-round rookie draft pick. Does the team like Dekoda Watson enough to keep his $1M+ salary in 2015? You also have the likes of Keith Smith, Cameron Lawrence, etc., who will come to camp and possibly win a spot based on special teams play.

You've outdone yourself. This is your 5th new thread. Are there more...

Durant should be cheap. With Rolando's fall off at the end of the season, he is likely not too expensive either. I don't know if Marinelli really wants Carter back because he has openly criticized him more than once and that the only player that I know of that Marinelli openly criticized. Also, I don't know if Carter will want to return after Hitchens started over him in several games.

Carter gets turnovers and it looks like Garrett values that and him.

Carter looks great when he is on and is terrible when he is off. He was not good at all during the Packers game.

He seems to have classic coach-killing attributes.

You also need to consider that this was his contract year. What do you get from Bruce Carter once he has a big new deal?

Carter is a tough on in my opinion.

Yes, I'm certain that factor into the discussion when they consider whether to offer him a contract, but in general Marinelli is more focused on players being consistent and knowing their assignments than a DC like Rob Ryan.

Eberflus did say recently that Carter was seeing the game better now, so maybe they do feel that he has turned the corner mentally.

If healthy, that is an incredible group of linebackers.

What a difference a year makes.

It will be an interesting position in the off-season.

I think it's a given they will re-sign Durant, he played well and the coaches seem to really like him. To me, just like Lee, it's a huge risk. Last two years he's finished the year on IR.

McClain's the question mark. Will probably be cheap, but I don't have a warm and fuzzy that he is totally committed to football.

Carter is gone IMO.

One of the 1st 3 picks has to be a LB.

Draft McKinney to play SLB
Resign McClain and Durant.

LB's
McClain
Lee
McKinney
Durant
Hitchens

Add SDE McPhee and we improve our front 7 from 2014. These moves won't break the bank.

I second that thought, one minute a all pro- then miss tackles and mistakes.
