Lions on verge of wasting a once-in-a-generation talent … again

The news that Calvin Johnson may retire from football at age 30 shows how much has changed since Barry Sanders called it quits at age 31 in 1999.

It also shows how little has changed in Detroit.

"Like many players at this stage of their career, I am currently evaluating options for my future," Johnson said in a surprise statement released Wednesday. "I would expect to have a decision regarding this matter in the not-too-distant future."

Sanders' retirement came as a shock to the entire sports world; he was near his prime if not still in it, one year removed from a 2,000-yard rushing season. He was one of the most electric players in his sport.
