If Free goes, I would not mind at all getting Bulaga. Problem is he will cost a lot.

I think that Doug Free is one of our underrated must-sign free agents.

I expect Parnell to be overpaid (by Washington) and losing Free as well would be a significant hit to our strongest group.

I agree but if he gets to FA and gets a decent offer he may leave as well. I do think there will be some Tackles available in FA that
we might view as upgrades and there's always a pretty good Right Tackle Only in the 3rd or 4th round. Be patient grasshopper
and all will be made known.

I think it makes too much sense for both sides not to get a deal done. Free brings more to the Cowboys than just playing RT. He's the quiet leader of the offensive line and I feel he serves as a quality example to the rest of the guys.

And I can't see Free leaving the Cowboys for essentially a year or two to play elsewhere. Is it worth it to uproot your family, possibly learn a new system, and leave everything you've known for year for a little bit more money?

I'll be very surprised if this one doesn't get done.

I hope your correct and your reasoning is sound but if he gets to FA and he and his agent are in the Commander's office with a pretty good offer that is only good as long
as he doesn't leave the room...guess what....Money talks and BS walks!!!

yea, due to age, I'd rather have Parnell, but I'm ok with which ever is cheaper.

No doubt. But I think it will be Parnell who gets that deal.

My own plan would be to re-sign Free for essentially a year of starting, two at most, and structure the contract to have him transition to vet backup/role player, while drafting an heir apparent in this year's draft.

Parnell, because he started some games and is younger than Free, will most likely get a pretty good offer
and is most likely gone. Everything comes down to whether Dez and Murray are retained and how much
of Romo's cap gets restructured. The Cowboys need a couple a really good FA on the defensive line
to help us get over the hump and you can't retain (overpay) everybody.

I would make one significant signing on the defensive line. An impact player capable of really improving a woeful pass rush.

Any other needs I would try to fill through the draft.

Parnell was given numerous chances to take over for Free but couldn't do it. It wasn't till Free went down that he took over. In doing so, Murray's performance went down. Free is better than Parnell, even with the whole age thing.

And this drop off was definitely because of Parnell? Had nothing to do with Romo not playing against Arizona or even just normal fatigue as a season went along?

The addition of Martin had done wonders for our OL especially Free. The whole group is unified and hang out on the daily. I strongly believe he stays and goes out a cowboy. A whole 180 a couple years ago. It goes to show that comradarie goes a long way.

The offense gave up less sacks per game and had a higher rushing average when Parnell started.

If Parnell gets overpaid by Washington, that's a bad sign for Dallas, IMO.

Who was the expert on the OL in Dallas the past 3 years? Jerry, No. Garrett, No. Callahan, Yes. If the expert wants Parnell, then it seems that the Cowboys should want him also.

meh....Callahan looked like a genius when we gave him talent, not so much when we were deciding between Phil Costa and Makenzie Bernadeau as starting centers and trying to play Nate Livings at guard. He likely was instrumental in how quickly guys like Frederick and Martin picked up the pro game, but he did not turn a group with average talent into an elite group.

Callahan was the expert last year with the addition of Martin And the commitment to the run (Linehan/Garret). The other 2 .... our QB got destroyed. Parnell is a starting RT but I'd rather have Free based on his continuity with the other 4.

Why does this response not surprise me? ;)

My belief regarding Washington is based more on age than anything else. That's where Parnell's biggest, most undeniable advantage comes from. They would look at that age and state that Parnell is their right tackle of the present and future (right or wrong). Free is closer to the end than the beginning and my thinking is that Dallas would retain him while drafting his eventual successor.

You're way underrating what he accomplished.

In 2013 he got solid play from guys that had been disasters (Bernadeau and Free) after they were in his system for a year. He got quality play from Leary and Fred side by side despite neither having started an NFL game prior to that season.

In 2014 they had one of if not the best OL in the league with a rookie, 2 second years guys and a big part of the season with a guy (Parnell) that had 1 start at OT on any level of football prior to the season.

Just being first round draft picks is no guarantee of success, especially as rookies. The OL is typically one of the harder positions for a rookie or 2nd year player to excel.
