They just asked Dodgers owner Stan Kasten how they compete for Championships every year. His answer was, "I hire the best people, and let them do their job." Just hearing that was the biggest of all punches to the nutz....had Billionaire Booger done that the last 30 years, can you JUST IMAGINE how many more Lombardi's we might have? Especially given there is no salary cap on coaches. Just thinking about it, makes me want to puke.
heartbreaking to hear this, but not anything we're not used to hearing, it would be great to see this happen one day

Is there a salary cap in baseball? I don't watch it, so that's an honest question.
I don't think there's a salary cap in baseball. That's why the A's can't compete with the yankees. If you haven't seen it yet, watch Moneyball. It's a classic.
Really? Please list the big time free agents they signed. I think the last one was T.O 18 years ago.
In free agency? No.
That's just not true. The Cowboys signed Brandon Carr in 2012. Since then there have been no big FA signings.
We have spent a lot of money on our own players. I didn't take it to mean just spending money in free agency.

We stopped doing that after Brandon Carr burned us (pun intended) but we used to go after some pretty big names in the past. Deion, Leroy Glover, Rocket Ismail, Marco Rivera, Ken Hamlin, Ryan McNeil, Anthony Henry, Greg Hardy.

We've drafted well over the years and we don't let our players sign elsewhere. Randall Godfrey is the last one I can remember. The extensions we've handed out are in the high hundreds of millions.

Dodgers and Yankees (in a no cap league) also spend substantially more than anyone else. That helps.

No disrespect to Dave Roberts. He managed his butt off in the World Series.

But I get it. The overarching point is that these guys use their resources to do everything they can to put the best team on the field. And NFL teams make attempts to do the same thing. Stephen likes the franchise tag and cheap UDFA labor. Why is that? Because it keeps him from having to negotiate a contract. The league dictates the terms of the agreement.

This FO is lazy. And they don't care.

Just imagine if he didn't buy the team and the Cowboys weren't in Dallas.

It also helps that there's no salary cap and the Dodgers keep signing the top free agents every season. There's already talks they're going to go after Juan Soto.

Jerry counts resigning his own players as FA signings…common guys, you know this. We just had two big FA signings this year with Dak and Ceedee! He signed them so they wouldn’t be FA…therefore it counts.

We like our guys.

Didn't they pay silly money to Brandon Carr about 12 years ago or so? I'm fuzzy on the details but I remember it being a rash, impulsive move.
Carr was second tier free agent we paid first tier money. He wasn't even the best CB on his own team.

There hasn't been a successful owner lead team since Al Davis in the 1970's. What Kasten does is what most owners do. He hires good people and gets out of the way.

When you have to list people who are currently in their 50s as players jerry signed in free agency.... explains a lot.

They got to the Super Bowl not too long ago only to lose to Gruden because he knew his former team inside and out.

Spending a whole bunch of money on free agents to assemble a "dream team" hardly ever works. Washington has tried it, the Eagles have tried it, the only team who's had any success with it that I can remember is the Rams.

I'm not against signing one or two good free agents but you build the team through the draft for the most part. We've had a ton of Talent on this team, probably six or seven Hall of Famers in the last 15 years but the culture just doesn't promote winning.

And what does ignoring free agency get you?

Answer: For starters: The worst DT in football and the worst RB group in the NFL.

As a Dodgers fan, I hate Jerry even more everytime i see Friedman make a move. I don't ever question what Friedman does, he makes moves in the off season and is always making the Dodgers better during the season as well. Tommy Edman was a genius move on his part as well as bringing back Kike. Then on Sundays I get to watch this crap circus and all it's excuses. Jerry is just a modern day P.T Barnum. My two favorite franchises couldn't be more worlds apart in how they're managed, one wins championships and the other is living off its glory days.

I would definitely use it to fill holes but you're competing with other teams whenever a player hits the market. You get a much better return if you draft well and extend them before free agency. Or just let them leave and replace them with someone who's already on the roster.

A LOT easier winning championships when you are in the top 5-10 spending 10 years running.

Jerry is like me at a casino black jack table, I take unnecessary risks that go against the math on purpose.

But in my situation, all the people at the table are laughing at me while inside I'm laughing at a bunch of idiots that think their math can beat a game that is mathematically not in their favor. Their perfect math still loses them money long term.

On Jerry's case, he's doing his own thing as a football GM, everyone is criticizing him....yet he is laughing all the way to the bank.

Business ruins sport. It's not a sport anymore...it's a time kill disguised as a sport.
