Looking Good
Wake Forest, Miami, Boise State and Arizona State on the schedule today. As we were the first to report form the combine, cornerback Kyle Wilson hurt his hamstring the week prior to the combine but is expected to workout today. Arizona State is also on today’s schedule while the Wake Forest pro-day is almost complete. Update: More on Miami & Wake Forest
Boise State
Early reports from Boise State have Kyle Wilson running his 40 in times of 4.42 and 4.45 seconds. Scouts at the workout characterized Wilson’s workout as good, not spectacular. This will secure a spot for Wilson in the late portion of round one.
Wake Forest
More than two dozen teams were on hand for the Wake Forest workout.
The top prospects for the Demon Deacons, including cornerback Brandon Ghee and offensive lineman Chris DeGeare, chose to stand on their numbers from the combine and opted to participate only in position drills. DeGeare, in particular, looked good.
Underrated defensive lineman John Russell turned in a solid workout from start to finish. Russell weighed 279 pounds, posted 30 reps on the bench then ran his forty times under 4.9 seconds. Scouts later put Russell through defensive line, linebacker, fullback and tight end drills. He accomplished most everything scouts asked of him and never tired. Russell, graded as a late round pick coming into the season, may have shown enough today to sneak into the seventh round.
Another underrated defensive lineman from the program, tackle Boo Robinson, also turned in a solid day.
He measured 6020/295lbs, posted a vertical jump of 28-inches, a board jump of 8’5’’ and completed 33 reps on the bench. Robinson actually pushed up 36 reps but scouts took a few away because they were not clean completions. His forty times ranged between 4.85-to-4.95 seconds, with a short shuttle times in the mid 4.4-second range.
Robinson’s fall down draft boards is rather surprising. Coming into the year he was given a grade of 5.6 by National Scouting, equivalent to a 3rd/4th round ranking. For some reason he doesn’t seem to register on many charts lately. Robinson did not play up to expectations as a senior yet did not turn in a terrible year either. There are also some lingering questions about his back.
We reported during our Senior Bowl coverage that people from the Wake Forest program told us in Mobile that Robinson’s back was an issue and he was forced to lose weight prior to his senior season. We were assured today that is not the case and the issue is more about tightness in his lower back which Robinson has been able to alleviate with specific exercises.

Update 5PM
Further sources have told us both of the forty times for Sam Shields were in the 4.3 area then later looked terrific in drills. Shields was arrested last Thursday night on a misdemeanor charge of possession of marijuana.
Running back Javarris James ran his forty in times which ranged between 4.52-to-4.55 seconds, an improvement over his combine performance.
Darryl Sharpton looked very average in position drills and struggled during pass coverage simulation.
Jimmy Graham has almost a dozen private workouts lined up, the first being next week with the Detroit Lions.
Rained spoiled the workout for the defensive linemen including ft-injured Eric Moncur and Joe Joseph. Both struggled to display their skills to scouts under the conditions.
My how times have changed. The Hurricane pro-day was always one to circle on the calendar. It was usually held the Friday following the completion of the combine and many scouts flew from Indianapolis straight to Miami for what would be the combine, part two. Then again those were the day the Hurricanes placed five and six players into the draft’s first round.
Today’s pro-day has been poorly attended for obvious reasons. The Hurricanes, who had just a single player drafted last April, will likely have just three this year.
Thus offensive tackle Jason Fox, who did not workout at the combine as he was still recovering from minor knee surgery, hurt his left hamstring running the forty and pulled up. He’s trying to complete the position drills but is struggling.
Receiver turned cornerback Sam Shields, who showed skill in the secondary last season, was fast in the forty, running sub 4.4-seconds.
Tight end Jimmy Graham did not run the 40 today but looked tremendous catching the ball in drills.
Notes:
Junior tight end Rob Gronkowski is scheduled to workout tomorrow in Arizona. Gronkowski denied recent reports that he is suffering from spinal stenosis, a potentially career-threatening condition. Cornerback Devin Ross is taking advantage of the opportunity and is also scheduled to run tomorrow. We will have the event covered.
Jimmy Clausen’s Notre Dame teammates, Robby Parris and David Grimes, both flew to the Los Angeles area this week and will be the practice receivers for the Notre Dame junior as he prepares for his April 9th workout. Clausen is scheduled to throw to both of them during his pro-day.
