http://www.draftinsider.net/blog/?p=1213
Today begins the first full week of Pro-day workouts in the month of March and the TFYDraftInsider.net will be covering the events from Utah and Troy State live. Both are incredibly important as Utah offers several underrated defensive backs who did not receive invitations to the combine while in Troy, Alabama, a number of players hope to redeem themselves from disappointing performances in Indianapolis. We’ll also have updates from Tulsa but start off with a few notes. Update 5PM- News Comes in from Troy State
Troy State
Fourteen teams traveled to Troy State to watch the seniors work out. The testing is complete and the players are no participating in the position drills.
Defenders Brandon Lange and Cameron Sheffield improved slightly from their combine numbers. Both ran times which ranged from the high 4.8’s to 4.91 seconds. Lange stood on his bench press number from the combine while Sheffield will bench at Troy’s second workout on March 24th.
Linebacker Boris Lee was faster and was timed as fast as 4.77 seconds.
One player who stood out was Jorrick Calvin, a prospect we’ve written about a number of times. Calvin, who did not play this season because of eligibility issues, looked like the next bigtime defenisve back prospect from the program before the NCAA ruling. He ran in the low 4.5’s today and from all accounts looked terrific during defensive back drills. Calvin is drawing a lot of interest and already has private workouts set up with the Detriot Lions tomorrow then the Cleveland Browns on Thursday.
Charlie Weiss of the Kansas City Chiefs was on hand to personally workout quarterback Levi Brown.
Utah
3:20PM: More from Utah.
Robert Johnson’s times ranged between 4.55-4.58. He weighed in at 203lbs, completed 13 reps on the bench and posted a three cone time of 6.56-seconds.
Koa Misi posted a three cone time of 6.98 seconds.
All 32 teams showed up in Salt Lake City today to watch the Utes workout. Included were six directors of college scouting.
The day did not start well for Zane Beadles as the big offensive lineman hurt his hamstring and is now set to workout on March 29th.
Other players fared much better.
Safety Robert Johnson, one of the biggest combine snubs this year, posted a solid forty time of 4.55 seconds. Receiver David Reed ran a 4.57 while speedy cornerback R.J. Stanford posted a 4.38.
Kao Misi participated in drills and according to sources looked outstanding. Some have stamped him with a first round workout today. More as it comes in.
Update on Northwestern workout: Sources have told us that defensive end Corey Wootton will not run this Thursday during the Northwestern workout and will wait until March 29th. As of now cornerback Sherrick McManis is also unlikely to workout.
Notes 11:30AM EST
This is a huge week for pro-days as Oklahoma, Alabama, California, Rutgers, Arizona and several other top D-IA programs are on the schedule. Northwestern’s pro-day is Thursday the 11th. Scouts will not only be watching the seniors from the Wildcat program but two of our favorite sleepers, cornerback Patrick Stoudamire of Western Illinois and Northern Illinois running back Justin Anderson.
Make Sure You check out our brand new forum and talk about all the workouts during today’s pro-day events!
