People around the Cowboys and around this board talk about how we can't live IN THE PAST. Past Decembers, they don't matter, only this year matters. Past seasons, even those that were historically successful don't matter, this isn't the 90's or the 70's.
And yet, many of the same people, especially Jerry Jones and the powers that be at Valley Ranch, look to the past when it is convenient to do so.
It reminds me of what I heard one NFL player say this past week. "Many want the glory but few want the story." That is, you want to be where I'm at, but are you willing to do what it took to get me here?
So, Jerry, lets apply that to you. You want credit for the three Super Bowl wins of the 90's? Fine. I'm willing to give you 100% credit. Hail to Jerry. But here is what I want in return.
STAY WITH THAT FORMULA PLEASE.
You were the owner. You hired a real football guy. You gave him his football team. You were still on the sidelines. You were still in the locker room. But you conceded to the alpha tendencies of another man who was your equal in his own realm.
Is Wade Phillips your equal in his own realm? Is he to coaching what you are to business? Is he aggressive? Is he supremely confident? Is he demanding? Does he insist on winning? Are you an excuse maker Jerry? I don't believe so, not really, not deep down. You have made too many changes in your organization to believe that you will let excuses go on for very long.
By the way Jerry, the formula has worked more than once. I know it didn't produce Super Bowls under Parcells, but it sure was the catalyst in building your current roster.
YOU CAN'T CLAIM THE PAST, EVEN WHILE YOU ARE DEPARTING FROM IT. You can't claim that you know what it means to win Super Bowls, because you have done it, only to try and do it in a way you never won the earlier ones.
I love your desire to win. I love seeing the passion you exude in the owner's box. But the most unselfish and competitive thing you could ever do for your fans, for your team, for YOURSELF, is take a step back, get rid of the two headed monster, and do whatever you have to do to get a real head football coach of the quality of Landry and Johnson on board. Then keep him there.
As much as many want to forget the past, we need to remember it, not keep trying to live off of it.
