i am curious how often do teams lob passes to tall receives.
i dont watch non-cowboys games, but sports radio in LA said there were about 7 lob passes to julio jones last night.
is that right?
did he only catch one?
is matt ryan known to be bad at throwing lobs?

I’m not sure of the frequency but it’s always seemed like a low percentage play given how often you see it. If there’s a huge height disparity that’s one thing, but it often times feels like a wasted play given that it’s the only read that is made.

I think of lobs as merely jump balls designed for the taller receiver to out jump the smaller defender, and though admittedly I didn't watch every down last night, I don't think there is any way there were 7 of those last night. There were definitely some that Jones had to fight for, and some where he wasn't as open as a QB would like, but those wouldn't be classified as "lob" passes to me. That's really pretty rare.

Actually, there are situations where "lob" passes can be ideal and a great example of that happened last night.

The situation was Julio had his back to Ryan and had not made his break in the out-route, however, at that same time pressure was coming so Ryan had to unload a soft lob that would give Julio time to identify the ball and catch it once he made his break. Had Ryan put mustard on it, chances are it would have been incomplete.

I lob beer to my friends, they never drop them!
