If Crawford signs an extension before the season begins, then we either over paid or he has the worst agent in sports.

Not quite. I saw those bad contracts coming a mile away and said so.

And my point still stands.

You are about as flawless as you claim Stephen is in your attempt for a yuck yuck.

Some players consider the possibly of having career ending injury. He has already had a major injury so that could be more on his mind than some other players.

At the end of this season he will have made 2.7M total. It might be worth signing a reasonable contract now to lock in over 10M in guaranteed money. Making a million less than he would have make is not really going to have much impact on his life; however, a career ending injury that causes him to miss out on over 10M in guarantees would have a major impact on his life.

IMO, it all depends on the specific players perspective. Some players never think the will have a career ending injury but others are probably concerned about it.

This is one of the reasons I think Crawford specifically might be one of those guys who would consider signing earlier. He's already had a season-ending injury, so the possibility of another season-ending (or God forbid, career ending) injury would have to be on his mind I'd think. I'm sure that he, moreso than some of his peers, is thinking about his future financial security. At least, this is what I would pitch to him if I was offering him a lower-than-market deal.

I think Crawford has earned an extension but I don't see it being among Stephen's priority items. Among other things, I think you'd have to be concerned about the impact that an early extension would have on negotiations with Dez. Is he likely to respond negatively to seeing others get paid, in large part based upon their potential, while he continues to wait, as a proven commodity, for the long-term deal the team claims it wants as much as he does?

That is what I was thinking, somewhere around 4/20m with 10m guaranteed.

Guys like Paea and Fairley didn't cash in this year so the market may not be that great.

How do you all feel about getting Crawford signed sooner than later? Do you think he would go for a more team-friendly deal before the season (or even during it) as opposed to after this season?

If they haven't already done so, I think the FO should consider offering him an extention early. I know some fans and media folks are projecting him to be a monster this season after having a good showing in 2014. I know Romo likes him based on his prediction about Crawford last offseason. But do the coaches and staff want him here long term? I would think so, since Crawford plays a key position in this defense, and there isn't too much proven depth behind him (Whaley, Coleman, anyone else?).

Now he may not go for it and instead opt to take his chances on a bigger contract in free agency next off season, but if there's any chance we can extend him now, I'd absolutely go for it. With 3 sacks last season, even though he had a nice impact, maybe that sack number puts him a little more under the radar... possibly gives us a chance to get good value from an extension now, as opposed to next season if he happens to rack up 6+ sacks.

What do you guys/gals think?

Not yet. I'd wait and see. Might be more expensive later, but might also be expendable. I would be patient and accept the risk.

I could see the Cowboys letting him walk if he has a big year stats wise next year.

id extend him, you need a solid core to keep on the team. hes not good enough yet to overhype, not bad enough to say ok the guy sucks and its clear" so, figuring no one on the team can beat him out, keep him. now to be fair, if you talk to people who know, Crawford IS NOT going to light up the stats but he makes plays that allows others to get their job done. And im pretty sure other people made this claim for Spencer, but Crawford seems to impress me more than Spencer ever could. SO just for that sake alone and i dont see anyone on the team doing what he does as well as he does. extend him.
