Is there anyone who really seriously thinks we should have kept him?

Read this from today's MMQB:

i. Alex Smith might have come of age against the Rams. Even with that nut job Antonio Bryant whining for half the day, Smith and Frank Gore showed they were the kind of offensive forces that you can win with.

I've always liked Frank Gore. McGahee would have been riding the pine at "The U" if Gore hadn't tore up his knees.

I think the two of them and Portis were all there at the same time.
I recall reading a story somewhere about how unnecessarily brutal Portis was to McGahee when he came in as a freshman, and that Gore was actually the more talented athelete but a much more supportive teammate.

Anybody else recall these stories?

Portis was the starter in the 2001 national championship team & mcgahee was actually the fullback. When portis departed mcgahee took over, then gore followed. If gore dosent tear his knee twice, he whitewashes both of these guys. Look at some of his game footage as a true freshman. The dude has serious breakaway speed & power. What your seeing know from gore in the pro's is half of what he could've been.

The year Willis Mac took over, Gore was the projected #1 until he tore his knees up. The kid really had some tough luck. It is good to see that he has persevered though. Pretty tough odds.

personally I always liked Bryant as one of my favorite young cowboys players, and still have a soft spot for him, but not sure how he would have fared if he stayed here.

My friend is a hardcore 9er fan. We talked about Gore when we saw him play before the knee injury, watching Miami. The dude had, and seems to have gotten it back, some serious ****in talent. dude is no joke

From Fox Czar article

What is it with jersey No. 81? Terrell Owens made it famous and we all know what kind of player he is, on and off the field.

Well, guess who wears T.O.'s old number in San Francisco? Antonio Bryant, a tough kid who Dallas coach Bill Parcells loved and then discarded because, well, he was too much like T.O. Bryant was traded to Cleveland and now he's playing in San Francisco. Sunday, 49ers quarterback Alex Smith misfired by 10 yards over Bryant and what does he do? He goes ballistic on the 22-year-old starter, showing him up on the field and again on the sidelines.

The rant was unbelievable. But Smith didn't cave and eventually hooked up with Bryant on a long touchdown that beat the Rams. Hey, I guess it pays to act like a nut. That's what receivers do and then they don't get the ball. By the way, Mike Nolan is now 3-0 vs. the Rams in his short career.

AB is an arse, always has been, always will be. One day he may understand that this is a TEAM sport. Maybe he should take up golf. He just cries constantly when the ball doesn't go his way, or heaven forbid, the QB makes a bad throw. 3 teams and counting...........

Bryant's fire good for 49ers

San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan is glad Antonio Bryant is on his team, especially after Bryant's game on Sunday.

SANTA CLARA — Antonio Bryant had just scored his first touchdown for the San Francisco 49ers on a spectacular 72-yard catch, and everybody wanted to talk about the ones that got away.

Bryant reacted angrily when quarterback Alex Smith overthrew him a few times in the first half of San Francisco's 20-13 win over the St. Louis Rams. The receiver gestured theatrically and stomped off the field, then later had an animated discussion with receivers coach Jerry Sullivan on the way to the locker room.

While the tantrums were delicious fodder for TV highlights and talk radio, the 49ers (1-1) don't see any problem with Bryant or his passion.

After all, they've employed another talented receiver wearing No. 81 who causes a whole lot more havoc than this.

"I don't know what receiver doesn't want the ball," Smith said. "A lot of people try to turn this into something. He's an emotional person and an emotional player. I don't have any problem with anything. We're good friends."

Bryant has been tough and elusive, a strong presence in the locker room — everything San Francisco wanted in a No. 1 receiver when he signed as a free agent in the offseason.

Coach Mike Nolan knew his team desperately needed a star receiver after attempting to play last season with Arnaz Battle, Brandon Lloyd and Johnnie Morton as its top three pass-catchers. Nolan figured Smith, the No. 1 pick in 2005, deserved better. "Antonio is a very competitive player, and that's one of the things we liked about him so much," Nolan said. "He does get animated at times, but it's all in the context of wanting to make the team better. He and I have our moments, but I'm darn glad he's here."

Wait, didn't he say over the off-season that he was putting all that behind him?

Oh, yeah. He says that every year.

I wish things would have worked out between Bryant and the Cowboys but it was clear the guy had more growing up to do.

Those quotes by the 49ers look errily similar to what the Cowboys were saying when Bryant was in Dallas.

"I like his fire."

"He's just emotional."

"Every receiver wants the ball."

I saw the video clips of Antonio's meltdown on Sunday and he's headed for another fall. He'll probably slip his jock strap off and try to strangle Nolan with it, and that'll be the end of Antonio in S.F.

SF is the perfect place for Antonio. A losing team that will feed him the ball because they will be behind a lot and they don't have anyone else to give the ball too. They might win 4 games, but he'll be in hog heaven catching all those passes. He couldn't handle playing a supporting role for a winning team. That's what seperates him from TO and Michael Irvin.
