IRVING, Texas - The Cowboys have several big names on their free-agent list who will likely demand some hefty contracts in the next few weeks.
But Thursday's move to re-sign deep snapper L.P. Ladouceur definitely was a top priority as well.
The Cowboys inked Ladouceur to a five-year deal worth more than $4 million, which has to be a sigh of relief considering the deep snapper has been nearly automatic in his three seasons with the Cowboys.
Ladouceur was scheduled to be a restricted free agent, but since he was undrafted, the Cowboys would not have received draft-pick compensation if he signed with another team unless they signed him to a higher-qualifying tender.
So instead, the Cowboys locked him up through 2012, likely ensuring themselves of the same consistency Ladouceur has provided since he joined the team early in the 2005 season.
That year, the Cowboys surprisingly cut veteran Jeff Robinson in favor of Jon Condo, a rookie free agent who was one of 13 rookies and first-year players to make the opening-day roster. However, Condo struggled in his first three games, prompting his release.
The Cowboys quickly signed Ladouceur and never looked back.
He has snapped cleanly on 196 punts, 86 field goals and 122 point-after attempts in his regular- and post-season career in Dallas. Last year, Ladouceur also had three special teams tackles, now six in his career.
Ladouceur becomes the fourth free-agent-to-be to sign a long-term deal since the start of the 2007 season. The Cowboys re-signed Tony Romo, Jay Ratliff and Patrick Crayton during the season.
Ladouceur is the first of a few more players the Cowboys are hoping to re-sign before the Feb. 29 start to free agency. Other restricted free agents include Marion Barber and Chris Canty. The Cowboys also have six unrestricted free agents in Flozell Adams, Ken Hamlin, Julius Jones, Nate Jones, Jacques Reeves and Keith Davis

Draft Oneil Cousins in the 3rd/4th round if he still on the boards when we draft. He's listed as an OT but plays all OL positions and is also a L/S. He would be more valuable to the Cowboys then any other OL & could challenge at several OL positions next year while also serving as a backup at the others -- particularly at center and even backup Leoceuver (sp?).
