Correct me if I am wrong on this, but I believe that Quinnen Williams was one of the few “bigger ticket” (larger) contracts that wasn’t restructured this offseason. In some sense that’s a bit surprising because you would think that he is a high level performer that’s young enough to stick around for a while.

He also wasn’t extended to a longer term deal which would have helped us out in keeping his contract number down going forward. Do you guys believe that the Cowboys are keeping their options open about trading him away at some point in the near future?

Will the Cowboys try to use Quinnen to amass picks to fill an upcoming need or for cap relief purposes? Let me know what your thoughts are on this situation.

They gave up too much to get Q. Williams here just to trade him away. They are merely keeping their options open as to when to do something with his contract.
You do not give up a 1st and a 2nd round pick, and not have a plan for him to stay here.

I'm hoping they look at locking up Q to an extension this summer. If not its really odd, but this is the 1 ugly side of spending so much on Q.....hes going into his age 29 season and they might prefer shoter contracts for an aging player.

If they don't feel comfortable extending a DT pushing 30 then they shouldnt have traded for him....but its also a mistake to wait another year and watch the price go up IMO.

My quess is they want him here long term but they will need him to play well in 2026. They should try to extend him next off season but stephen likes to wait so it may not happen until 2028 when he becomes a free agent.

I would assume that’s the case .

They currently have him on an extremely cheap contract right now. They only had to pay a little over $8 million last year, this year a little under $22 million and in 2027 $25.5 million. They didn't want to touch that contract because they know next year that they need to extend him and any fake years would just make that contract an even bigger pill to swallow.

Should they have extended him already? Sure, but Stephen & his buddy are in charge of contracts and cap and they aren't good at it.

They should have extended him and taken the opportunity to lower his cap impact before free agency.

The fact that they didn’t is more evidence of the short sighted delay tactics that have become the signature management philosophy of the front office

It hardly ever works out and ends up costing them much much more.

I’m certain this will end up costing them $20m in guaranteed money that is just a complete waste

The front office are awful and as inept as any in the league.

Possibly the best trade Jerry ever pulled off.

Well worth the cost. A top player at a key position where there aren’t a lot of true difference makers.

I’m beyond thrilled to have him.
I was truly impressed at first with the trade. But to be honest, I did not see much difference with the defense last year. They got pounded in the second half of almost every game.

Also, the trade is already suspect from a value perspective

Math and the trade value charts show that if either the Cowboys or Packers finish with a top 13 pick, the Jets will end up getting more for Q than the Cowboys did for Micah, giving them the *better of* picks was just dumb.

There’s almost no way, short of both Cowboys and Pack making it to the Divisional round of the playoffs, to even call it an equal trade.

And forget the fact that next 2027 picks are in a much more stacked class.

Bottom line, Jerry got too little for Parsons and gave up too much to get Q.

Last year was a mess, comparable to 2020. Then Quinn and Micah came in and stabilized things to a decent point.

I expect something similar this year with CP and Caleb.

It’ll all work together, and having veteran talent like Q and Clark inside should enable the younger edge guys to get some favorable matchups, and/or make the corners look better.

It all starts at DT, and it being weak for about forever was the core reason as to why this defense was so soft.

Don’t expect big plays or stats from Q, but he will be a very large part of what this defense does.

This is an underrated point. I'm a massive fan of Q and glad to have him on the team, but there is a real chance that come February and the draft order is set that the Cowboys will have given up more value for him than they acquired for Parsons.

He will be extended next season freeing up cap space.

I "liked" the post because it's thought-provoking, but no, I don't think they'd be planning on moving him in the near future — or anytime at least until the defense is stacked better at other positions. It's too much in flux at this point.

Hopefully, they restructure and pic a couple hungry vets. One or two more MLB, EDGE, or CB that could make a nice impact. Window is closing by 2028. We need to make moves now if we want to make a legitmate run.

Does this mean Jerry didn’t win the Micah trade? /s

I’m thrilled as well. However, it won’t be so good if we can’t keep him past his current contract. I have a bad feeling we’re not going to be able to.

While I agree with your assessment, I don’t think we have all the details. If it is accurate that Q wanted an extension and the cowboys wanted a restructure, we don’t know how much Q wanted. Did the dumbos even ask? Or were they just stuck on not extending him now? I suspect that Q would rather wait for FA to cash in as well as the dumbos being dumb.
