We need two kickers. Hey, put Heath in for the short kicks.

That's what I was hoping we'd do in the offseason. Keep Redfern as our punter and short-range field goal kicker and use Maher for the longer-range stuff. It wasn't the perfect solution, but Maher's inconsistency on the short stuff made it seem like a reasonable option. There's not much difference between Jones and Redfern on punting.

Kinda weird that Jones is woofing some punts. Maybe it's a symptom of the team's collective psyche.

Some of you are like Jerry. You are blinded by the “Show” and you can’t see the obvious. Mayer is a bottom tier kicker or worse, when it comes to kicks 40 yards or less. This includes extra points.

I hope it doesn’t happen, but it won’t be long before he misses another short FG or extra point to help us lose!
Pretty much everyone has acknowledged that he is inconsistent at the shorter stuff that should be easier to hit. He has a big leg for sure but I'm incredibly surprised he wasn't replaced this off-season or at least brought some real competition.

wasnt there a point in the teams history where that actually happened?
Okay, a little research - two kickers to open the 2009 season:
18 David Buehler K - 5th round draft pick out of USC
6 Nick Folk K

They cut Folk after several untimely misses and added:
4 Shaun Suisham K
He and Buehler were on the final roster

The 2010 season opened with Buehler and they added
2 Kris Brown K
Both finished on the final roster.

Beuhler was an interesting player, who suffered some misfortune. In 2009, he was injured by a pole from a collapsing training camp structure. He became their kickoff specialist, and tied the record for touchbacks. He had the size of a linebacker, so he was also on the squad as a coverage player and was 5th in tackles in 2010. He only made about 75% of his FGAs. He suffered a groin injury that year, hence, the other kicker.
He was strong, and kicked four 50+ FGs.

By 2011 training camp, the Cowboys opened with four place kickers, including Dan Bailey. We know the rest.

Is Maher the first player in NFL history to make two kicks from 62 yards or more?

He has to be.

If I remember correctly, he wasn't doing that well in the preseason. I think he banged a few in the warmup game, though, or maybe it was the last preseason game. Before then, I thought Redfern was outplaying him.

Interesting, I didn't track him closely in preseason.

No doubt Maher has a leg it's funny to trust a kicker more at 55+ yards rather than inside 45. Lol

Interesting, I didn't track him closely in preseason.

Jones had 1 for 38 in the first preseason game, but bounced back with 3 for 49.7 in the next game and 3 for 45.7 in the third game. He didn't punt in the final one. (So he only had one bad game with a very small sample size.)

Redfern had 4 for 49.3 in the first one, 5 for 47.8 in the second, 4 for 44.8 in the third and 5for 42.4 in the fourth. His overall was 45.9 and Jones was 46.3. He had seven downed inside the 20 while Jones had two. Jones is averaging 43.0 during the regular season. Redfern averaged 43.3 in the one game he's played for Atlanta this season.

So it's pretty close to even ... with Redfern also having that short-range FG kicking ability to his advantage. However, he didn't get to try FGs in the preseason (that I can find) so the only thing we have to go on there are training camp reports that said he was looking pretty good at it.
