Look for a Head Coach NOT a coordinator.

The one thing I'm tired of seeing is lets go get this coordinator...

We need a coach who has head coaching experience, positive head coaching experience.

Not necessarily a super bowl ring, but at least some playoff wins.

You want a coach who is modern (i.e. 1990+, tough, and has had success in the playoffs.

Bill Belichick has 15 playoff wins.

I think Jimmy Johnson would actually be a great option for us, especially if we go back to the 4-3.

The other winningest coaches who I would say are available are

1. Mike Holmgren
2. Bill Cowher
3. Tony Dungy
4. Jeff Fisher
5. John Fox
6. Jon Gruden
7. Brian Billick
8. Dennis Green

Whatever you do Jerry, you better not hire a coach who has never won a playoff game.

I actually do think Bill Cowher is our best bet. We have the talent, I really do think we do. We need to make adjustments no doubt, but I think a good head coach who knows how to win, and win in the playoffs in crucial. Someone who isn't too old as well.

If Ken Whisenhunt gets fired, I'd go right after him.

The only time I want to hear Dennis Green's name in relation to the Cowboys is when Jerry calls him to satisfy the Rooney Rule.

I would say Cowher - Gruden - Dungy - Holgrem - Shanny - Billick - Gaily
Turner - W Phillips - Fox

I won't even put Green in the running why not add Jim Mora

are all retreads IMO

A retread coach with a ring is still just a retread. Duplicating that kind of success is still a longshot in the NFL

Hiring old coaches that once gave you some glory years is not a good idea. It fires people up at the press conference alright, but they can never live up to what they once were, and ultimately tarnish their good name as a football legend. Signed: Joe Gibbs

I think you better hire the best man for the job, regardless if he's a current coordinator or a former head coach. Just because a former head coach is available, it doesn't mean the he is the best fit for a particular situation.

Craig

Landry, Lombardi, Walsh, Belichick and many other great head coaches were cordinators. It's a toss up with them just like every other 1st time HC, some make the transition some don't. I don't think we should just make a blanket statement against hiring a cordinator.

my point is that given where our team is, we need someone who is established.

We have the ability and talent to win a super bowl with the right coaching behind us. We could have done it this year.

No one jumps into the position of head coach from nothing, but lets not go looking for someone who is inexperienced.

lets get a headcoach with the playoff wins etc... like you said (and I do like Bill Cowher as our best bet) and let the coach hire his own entire staff including coordinators.

I am so tired of seeing Jerry hire a coach and bring him here to an already made staff.
When you hire a headcoach and trust him to be the leader, then let him be the leader. He should hire a staff that he feels best suits his style and who he trusts.

You want someone with playoff winning experience.

Whether they be a head coach or coordinator.

That said you want someone who has experience running a team.

We're not in the position where we can build off on a coach who isn't established.

Its like having a rookie QB on a super bowl talented team. You don't want that you want a proven veteran.

If we were where we were in 2003, I would agree with you, a young talented coach might be okay. But here we are in 2010 with the talent to win a super bowl.

We need someone who is Romo Friendly.

You build around your quarterback. Look at Sean Payton. He built around Drew Brees. New Orleans doesn't even have a great defense, and they won a super bowl.

Build an offensive line, have a running back who is dynamic, a defense that can force turnovers when they have the lead...

Only reason we hired Jason Garrett is because he was a Cowboy, and people were calling him this rising star amongst coaches. Jerry wanted a piece of that.

But like any selection that doesn't pan out, cut your losses.

Let me guess, you couldn't get in but you tried. Those darned old admission offices and English writing essays.... if only they knew how smart you really are.

And most NFL athletes are brilliant just like you.

Right?

Everyone forgets how miserably Belichick failed as the Head Coach in Cleveland.
