Here we are just a few short weeks away from the draft, and everyone knows exactly what Dallas is after. In some order, they hope to come away from the next month with a corner, a receiver, and a running back. Even better, they have the ammo to get something done.
I think the Pacman thing is the most interesting subject at the moment. Will the Cowboys deal for him or won't they? Will he be reinstated or not?
I guess the reason why that is so interesting to me is because it probably affects the way Dallas handles the draft. Get Pacman on the team and available to play by next season, and corner drops down in the order of importance. If you can't get him, then corner becomes even more pressing in the draft...
Primarily for that reason I would like for something to get done soon. My impression is that Jerry feels the same way after reading some of his comments about figuring on something getting done in the next couple of days. It either needs to happen, or they need to move on and start looking at other options - like drafting a corner high.
Jerry's other big interest at the moment clearly seems to be getting Romo another weapon at receiver. When you factor in TO's age, the doubt about Glenn's health, this is something that needs to be addressed.
What I find so interesting about the receiver dilemma is that Jerry doesn't seem to be a big fan of drafting them high. In light of what happens to a lot of highly drafted receivers, I can't say I blame him. Better to get the sure thing.
And it looks like that is what Jerry is hoping for. Chad Johnson, Anquan Boldin, and Roy Williams are commonly mentioned as targets for Dallas, and Jerry has done nothing to dissuade those ideas. He's even come right out and said that his first round picks might be appealing to a team when the Cowboys are on the clock...
Honestly, that would probably be a great use of a draft pick. I like having a sure thing, and I like having someone who is ready to contribute from day one.
But which receiver? The Bengals take a steep hit by dealing Chad Johnson, and when you add in his personality to the Cowboys team, I'm just not sure I see the fit. The Cardinals look like they need to pay Boldin, but he is a huge part of their offense. They have built around he and Fitzgerald, so it makes sense to keep them together. The Lions seem to be the obvious team to deal with, and Roy Williams looks like a great fit in coming back to Dallas, but the Lions keep saying they aren't dealing him. They could be posturing, or it could be legit. We'll just have to see, I guess. In the meantime, I keep trying to think of another receiver who could really help this team and might become available, and I just don't see it right now.
And you still have a need at running back. It's just about a foregone conclusion that Dallas takes one in the first round, and there should be some great options available.
I think a lot of fans are still holding out hope for Darren McFadden, and while there is definitely a way to get something done, I just don't see it. I don't think it's a wise use of assets. If you move up in the draft by giving up your two number ones, you are still going to have a real need at receiver, and the only way you are going to have to fill that is by either dealing away future draft picks for a player or grabbing a rookie receiver in the second. Neither sound as good to me as staying right where you are making the best of it.
If you can come away from the next month with Pacman added to your secondary, Roy Williams added to your receivers, and J.Stewart or F.Jones added to the backfield, I think you've hit a grandslam. Best of all, you could do it with nothing more than money and the first round. You've got the rest of the draft to fill every hole you've got left...
So what is the best way to approach this next month? What do you target first, and how do you try to fill the holes and strengthen this team?
