ok guys check this out, considering our draft this year, and next, i found to my thinking about 45-47 guys on roster to keep, that leaves about 6-8 players to fill out the 53 man roster, which shows we are getting close to being a good team.

in regards to that, it also means, eventually the players you draft might not make it in 2 years or so. so im thinking either trade some of those picks up for better picks, or maybe trade a future 2008 pick like our 3rd or 4th to move up in the draft this year to get a really good player. As i mentioned in another post, we probably will lose flozell adams next year in free agency and probably get a 3rd round compensation for him, considering we dont get a better player in 2008 in free agency.

1. 76 Adams, Flozell OT 6-7 340 9 Michigan State

So, look at my list, of 47 players, with the draft and us having 10 draft picks, what do you guys think that the cowboys should do. I am pretty sure that we lose flozell next year, then aaron glenn next year too, most likely unless T O gets a better grasp of his last nfl stop, we might lose or cut him too. I am probably sure, if we keep al singeton this year, most likely next year he is gone. And if they keep riveria this year, most likely he is gone next year. So, that leaves 5 players gone in 2008, probably add brad johnson for 2008 too, so that makes at least 6 players gone in 2008.

Since the draft consists of 7 picks normally, what do you think the cowboys should do with the roster they now have and the picks for next year,

CJ, of the list of 45, one is already gone and there are 4 or 5 more whose names are hardly recognizable. There are also an additional group that will be fighting for there professional lives in TC. There are probably 10 players that are replacable easy. If the draft picks and UFA are good then we will continue to churn the bottom of the roster. But we need some impact players in this draft and next years draft. Then we are well on our way.

That's a pretty good list.

And on top of the 10 draft picks you have to figure that one or two undrafted FA's will make the squad.

The trouble is that you won't know if they're "impact" players for quite a while... I don't see many positions where any of the draft picks or undrafted FA's are going to have much of an impact in 2007. Obviously injuries can play a big part in this but we still have decent depth at many spots that will keep first year players on the bench.

I thought that Al Singleton was an unrestricted free agent unlikely to be re-signed? And I think Hamlin's signing may put Elam's roster spot in jeopardy as well.

Singleton's contract ended after last season & haven't read anywhere that we interested bringing him back and Parish only signed for remainder of 06 season so he's also gone.

I do believe Tyler Thompson could be in trouble this year unless he shows more as a RB then straight ahead speed. Miles Austin has become a good PR after Thompson went down and has shown promise at WR. If we draft a CB this year and we certainly must, either Reeves or more likely Nate Jones won't make the team this year.

Riveria is a big question mark. We didn't give a big contract to Davis for him to sit on the bench. If Riveria able to come back, he might be kept as a backup to save cap space this year. But it more likely he won't be able to return to the game.

Agree that Adams probably also gone after 07 season cause I doubt we want to re-sign him to huge contract at his age. Aaron Glenn (35) also gone after this season and probably Keith Davis as well unless he beats out Elam as Roy Williams backup and his good ST ability. Crayton will be a FA next year and frankly I think he will be too expensive to re-sign simply as our #3 WR; hopefully either Hurd or Austin show enough to replace him. Unless TO has a break-out year, agree he will be gone after this season. I do believe Terry Glenn will be around thru the 08 season but that probably his last with us.

yes, singleton isnt resigned, but i am thinking the cowboys will resign him to a low contract for just one more year.

i think with tyson thompson, you need to keep him one more year, that would give you a good backup, next keep in mind that teams are trying to get a low ranked running back from san diego, turner i think, and the chargers are saying either a 1st and a 3rd or nothing, and keeep in mind that the jets almost traded for julious jones last year. so i am thinking they want to keep tyson. also with miles and tyson returning kickoffs, that would give you a solid one two punch for kickoffs, all we need now on special teams is a good punt returner. i agree about the defensive backs, i think they will draft a cornerback or safety in 1st or 2nd round, so that leaves one of those guys out, with elam he is a young upcoming safety to spell and play on special teams.

Riveria is a big question mark. We didn't give a big contract to Davis for him to sit on the bench. If Riveria able to come back, he might be kept as a backup to save cap space this year. But it more likely he won't be able to return to the game.
i dont think riveria can come back, but im reading that the cowboys might put him on physically unable to perform, the pub list, and if he comes back fine, if not, he would be cheaper to keep this year, then cut him, he costs more to cut than keep him this year.

Agree that Adams probably also gone after 07 season cause I doubt we want to re-sign him to huge contract at his age. so i was just wondering, and i agree with what one guy wrote we need an impact player, whether it is at cb, or wr, that is a good punt returner, that could win a couple of games for us on punt returns, while scoring some or returning a couple of interceptions to turn a game around on defense. so i was just wondering, how close we were to having a squad of players, and if it would be better to trade up, with some of those extra 10 picks, or even use one from the 2008 draft to get another good player this year, f the roster is going to be pretty full next year.

How do players who have to clear waivers before being signed to the PS qualify as "keepers?" I would think a "keeper" would be someone that all 31 other teams didn't pass on.

Just meant, in the end, there will be 61 guys kept. Not that hard to understand is it? Doesn't mean they will ALL be here in 10 years or even 10 months.

I bolded the ones who I think just flat won't make the team OR can be pushed out by someone having a better TC. I just am not counting on Ellis to come back as a productive player because of the type of injury & his age. IF he does, BIG positive for us. So, I think there's still PLENTY of room for more talented players.....

Between Nate Jones and Reeves, Id keep one of them. There is one thats pretty decent, he filled in for Henry when he was injured, played some dime, nickel and did pretty good, I think it was Jones.

As I've said elsewhere, this is a good problem to have. But it is a dilemma of some sort. We've got 10 draft picks and several promising players and not nearly enough spots to squeeze them into.

So, like the original poster, I think trading up is way on the table. However, instead of trading next year's picks to trade up this year, we should trade for future picks, which IMO are way undervalued.
