I have a 60" Mitsubishi square screen but am now wanting to take the plunge into HD like everyone else.

Since there's some bigtime Cowboys tv watchers here, I wanted to get your opinions on TV's in the 65-70" size.

I've been told Samsung is the way to go, but I've never had trouble with Mitsu's. Both have DLP and the 1080i resolution.

Any ideas?

I see you're looking for something "bigger" but I'll let you know what I got this year and have been thrilled with...

I got the 50" Panasonic plasma. Very thin profile and hangs neatly on the wall. It's an amazingly sharp picture, and it was reasonably affordable. I ended up buying it from Newegg.com and it cost me $2200 with no tax and free shipping.

The only problem with going over 50" is that the price more than doubles to go up to 65". If money is no object, then I think Panasonic makes a 65" TV in the same line.

But all the research I read for 42-50 inch plasmas said that Panasonic was the best "Bang for the Buck."

Have you looked into projection at all? If your set up is suited for it, I've seen some amazing home theatres that utilize the front projection. 9 foot screens that look amazing!

We have an RCA Scenium with DLP and although it isn't as large as you're looking for (only 50''), the DLP does indeed rock.

We looked at a bunch of TVs in the showroom at Best Buy and this one had by far the best picture, even moreso than ones priced $1000+ more.

One thing I would like to add is that if you want a TV that big, get something with 1080p.

I have the HP 50" plasma...

Top notch for the money as some outlets sell it for as little as $1600. You will find very few negative reviews on the unit and the picture is outstanding. It is also sold under the Panasonic brand for a few dollars more...

If you want the creme de la creme... then Pioneer is the way to go. They are light years ahead of everyone else technology-wise, but they are also the most expensive.

After talking to many in the business here is what I found out...

Pioneer is the tops far and away. Panasonic is highly reliable and nice. Sony is very nice, but 90% of the innards are made by Samsung, and you can get a Samsung much cheaper. Stay away from Philips at all costs. Two different dealers told me that the repair rate on Philips is 5-1 of all the other brand COMBINED. Panasonic also just released a 65" unit and they also have a 103" unit if you make that kind of money. Hitachi and LG also make quality sets as do Fujitsu and Vizio (Vizio is probably the most affordable as well)

The above was for Plasma sets.

LCD and DLP are also options. They aren't as thin as Plasma's but they are still pretty thin. Plasma will win against these units in almost every category but they are still very watchable units. DLP and LCD are MUCH cheaper for the 60" plus units.

I'll second the Pioneer opinion. I have a rear projection Pioneer HDTV that's excellent.

I'd suggest getting a widescreen. I have a Samsung 50" widescreen DLP HDTV and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Both Plasma and LCD HDTV are the way to go for picture quality but are expensive......most now that are out do 1080p resolution ...if your into gaming and watching HD dvd's

Pioneer...Pansonic...Sony and Samsung are the best....IMHO

IF your looking for a cheaper solution....and very good picture quality but bulkier....then rear projection DLP or LCD are a very good option

LCD rear projection.....Sony and Pansonic...

DLP projection...Samsung is probally your best bet...

I purchased a HP DLP 58" projection and love the picture quality....but they have dicontinued that product now :(

before purchasing this unit....I researched for months and was sold on the Sony LCD rear projection HDTV 1080i /720p unit....it was the best bang for the buck IMHO....until I saw the price and picture quality of the HP.

I hope this helps

I haven't seen a better picture quality then DLP.

DLP shows colors exceptionally well, but it's one problem is that it doesn't do too well with darkness. If you're watching a scary movie and that virgin girl is walking through a dark forest with nothing on but a thong and bandaids, you won't see it too well. However, if she's on the beach at noon, you won't see it better then on DLP. :D

I have a 32 inch LCD that I love and it is the perfect size for my apartment, but one day I will get a nice massive TV.

I have 2 plasmas. A 50" Pany in the living room and a 50" LG in my bedroom.

Saying that.

I wish the Samsung 1080i DLP 61" was available when I bought my other tv's.

It is by far more clear than any of my current Plasmas.

You want 1080i. Do not settle for anything less. Far as I know. You cant get 1080i in plasma atm. You might - but only a Pioneer and paying like $6k.

Good luck

Just wait about 6 months a new technology called Laser TV is coming out with Plasma quality at DLP prices

Here is one of the articles on it

http://www.i4u.com/article5383.html

here is a more in depth review (basically a better DLP technology)

http://www.tvtechnology.com/features/news/2006.05.31-n_mitsubishi_touts.shtml

IMO, DLP has better quality then Plasma. From what I've seen, it just looks better. Brighter, more vibrant colors, clearer, and you can see the picture from angles.

I know a few people that swear by DLP over Plasma and that was what I was looking at. I decided to wait due to money and see what hits this year if nothing else the Laser TV should drop prices of other TV's :bounce:

Really comes down to how much you want to spend. I have had two Sharp front projectors and loved both of them. Front projection gives you the biggest picture of all- I have a 10 FOOT diagonal screen.
DLP, etc it is all in the persons opinion; different people see it in different ways. Look at each using the same movie, etc and that way you can really get a feel for it. BUT one thing to be sure of: get the highest resolution you can get, since real HDTV on the newer type DVDs really demands it; and I am not even getting to broadcast HDTV which is finally starting to arrive for more and more programs.

IN the size you want you have 3 options.
Lcd, dlp or sonys new sxrd.

I would stay away from samsung at all costs. The color wheels they use on their dlps are cheap.

I personally would stay away from a projection lcd. Poor quality.

Mitsubishi DLP diamond series is your best bet. Mitsubishi's can be set up from a pro for another 200 to 500 bucks, well worth it. The 57 inch and up are nice sets.

Plasma is the best bet, pioneer elite makes a 50 inch 1080p panel. It kicks axx.

The best panel on the market is the fujitsu. about 8 to 10 grand for the 50 inch though.

You cant go wrong with the mitsubishi Diamond Series DLP and a pro set up. Bulbs I believe are about 250 for those so that is what to expect to pay for a new one in the future.
