I am looking to build my own mattress (multiple layers stuffed in a cover), and am looking for some suppliers. I have found a few on the internet, but looking to see if any of you have experience with them?

I am probably going to do a Dunlop Latex or HD Polyfoam base layer, and two talalay latex layers on top of that.

You're gonna need some help finding an apparatus to get you out of that thing................. ;)

@CyberB0b - not sure how much this will cost, but apparently Talalay Natural Latex is the way to go. Everything I read pointed me in that direction (Although apparently Dunlop is like #2, and then nothing else was close to those two)

@Idgit - Buyer beware on Casper and Tufts & Needle. 1.5 years ago I did a TON of research on a new mattress because its an incredibly difficult thing to assess AND because I had a severe herniated disc (L5/S1) that apparently is what it feels like to give birth. Sleeplikethedead is a good resource. These mattress reviews you see are from ppl that have had it for like a week and rave, but apparently their resiliency is very poor. Anyway, from my research, even if well-intentioned they are heavy on marketing and light on quality. They also apparently are very fumy/smelly for a while.

The mattress I did end up with has been a godsend for my back, I even avoided surgery. My ex got a less expensive model from them and she loves it, and everyone that has ever slept on my bed raves (heck one girl that's all she jokingly asks about "how is the best bed in the word", though I'll choose to take that in a different way ;) ) Bottom line this is what I'd recommend to my mom, dad, etc - anyone I love.

Company: Charles P Rogers - handmade in the USA, been around forever.
Mattress i got: Powecore Estate (7000 model)
Mattress my ex got that she says was her best ever purchase: St Regis

One other thing I'd add from my crazy obsessive research - at the end of the day if you choose to buy (Rather than build) your own mattress - you should lay on these things for at least like 20 minutes each to get a proper assessment.

If the mattress sales people there collectively think that's anything but the exact right thing you should be doing, I'd seriously question buying a mattress there. Laying down for a few seconds or even a few minutes won't tell you a thing. You're talking about dropping some serious money on something for your health that you'll use literally almost every night.

Oh and for anyone that may have back issues - do core and squat work - western habits have us siting in chairs all day from a very young age, turning our core, glutes, and flexibility into garbage.

I bought 8" of 2 lb polyurethane foam, 2" of 28 ILD dunlop, and 3" of 19 ILD dunlop for the topper. I also bought a bamboo cover to enclose it.

The 8" and 2" topper came off a new mattress I bought, but it was slightly damaged in shipping. The seller didn't want it back, so I got it for free. I'll probably replace the foam in a few years.

Super cool man! Can you take a photo? How much did that run altogether (if you don't mind me asking)?

I hope it ends up being great.

You doing anything special for pillows?

The bamboo cover was $86 from Amazon
The 3" topper was $349 from SleepOnLatex
The 2" talalay and 8" poly foam ended up being free, but the cost was around $550. The poly foam is probably the weakest link. If it wears out in a few years, I will replace it with this 6" dunlop base from Mattresses.net That's about $610 shipped. This is all King size.

Not sure how the cover will work out. I have a shredded bamboo memory foam pillow that I have been using that I am happy with.

I got the cover today. I added a 3" convoluted memory foam gel topper between the two latex layers. It was a pain to squeeze it all in the cover. I took a gamble on the cover and it is high quality. Good strong zipper and materials. I've seen similar ones for $200.
This is the setup :

8" of 2 lb polyurethane foam
2“ talalay latex medium firm
3" convoluted memory foam gel
3“ dunlop latex soft

Here she is.

I still need to fluff the edges a bit where there was some over hang.

That's awesome man - how did it feel? Was it firm (I assume the cover has to keep it all together?

Firm, but supportive. Feels great.

Good for you man - You should post instructions on instructables or online and screw the mattress industry!

Just curious how much money one can save themselves, mind me asking how much materials run all in? Did you have to do any custom cutting or just order to size and layer?

You can cut and glue, but not really necessary. I stacked multiple layers and stuffed it in a cover.
