Some background on the situation:

One day, several months ago, I heard whimpering and barking coming from the shed that is right over the fence from us. I thought, "Dear God, who keeps a dog in the shed. That's just not right. Maybe it's just temporary, like they’re doing work in the house or something."

It turned out that they actually had 2 dogs in there, one Yorkie puppy and one terrier puppy that appears to be a put bull mix. I ended up talking them out of the Yorkie.

I gave them a sob story about a friend that had 2 Yorkies, the older of which had just died and they wanted to get another companion for the younger one, and would they be interested in letting me take this little one off their hands.

So this leaves the other one. She spent nearly all of her time in the shed, being let out for short amounts of time during the day. Finally, one day she's out on a makeshift collar and crappy chain.

I ended up buying her a real collar, tie out and lead, food/water bowls and gave them a dog house I had. I even bought a bale of straw for bedding.

I visit her 3x/day and play fetch with some tennis balls I got for her.

It's not as much as I'd like to do, but I work full time at home and care for our 1yo daughter as well. We also have cats, so I don't think they would appreciate the dog as much as I do.

So last night the dog is back in the shed, and the dog and I are both distraught. I see the guy out there this morning and ask him about her. He says he's moving her to another house because he got a letter from our complex about keeping her outside.

He asked if I wanted her, and I said yes. I had been talking to a friend of mine to see if we could find someone willing to take her (my friend is part of a charity that does TNR for cats in the area). So, now we have the dog, but she still needs a home.

My friend has a spare kennel for her temporarily, but I thought I would ask if anyone in our area would be interested in giving this beautiful young girl a loving home. Please PM me.

Here she is:

Nice of you to do this. If I didn't already have 3 dogs, I would be interested. Sorry. Good luck on finding her a quality home.

Damn. I'd do it today if I weren't in limbo with my living situation. I'm moving in the next three weeks or so, and if I end up renting again I likely can't have another dog. I'm also looking at buying a place, but it'd have to happen asap..if that happens I'll let you know.

She really is a doll. For having minimal contact with people, shes very sweet, but needs some behavior training desperately.

I've taught her how to sit and were working on lay down. I'm also trying to get her to stop jumping up on me. She's also very mouthy, which I'm not entirely sure what to do about, aside from getting her chew toys or rawhides.

She learns fast, and I suspect that she would calm right down if she was able to be with someone for more than a few hours a day.

Just a bit of follow up on this situation. :)

Kilyin and I have actually decided to keep her.

I had been working with the Richmond Animal League to try to find a home. There weren't any foster homes available, so we have had her this whole time.

I finally realized that would probably be caring for her until we got her a permanent home, and in order to attend the adoptions events held by RAL, I had to get her vaccinated.

The day after I got her all taken care of, she came down with Parvo. We decided to bring her inside at that point since she was so sick that she probably have died if I wasn't nursing her round the clock.

It was also good circumstances to introduce her to our cats. They aren't thrilled but at least they have had time to get somewhat used to her before she's back to her old self.

A week has passed and she acts as if she's almost back to 100%. I'll be calling the vet tomorrow to get her rechecked.

We decided on Friday night that after all this, we wanted to just keep her. She's great with our daughter, good with the cats and just the sweetest thing. Not to mention the rather large monetary investment we have in her.

Now if we can just get her housebroken, we'll be set! :)

Here's a couple updated pics:

Pathetic face!

She's cute...I'm glad you kept her...that's where she really belongs.

Very good of you.

Congrats and bless your heart. You've made a wise decision here; she will bring you and yours years of joy and companionship, and then she'll rip your heart out when you have to say goodbye. (Sorry for bringing the house down/ just put my old female dog down recently) But in between it's unforgettable. I mean, we're not talking cats here....;) JK

As they say, "Oh, what a difference a day makes" or in this case, three days.

She's recovered even more and turned into a dog that is totally wreaking havoc on our cats and home, not to mention displaying dominant behavior toward our daughter.

Despite our best intentions, we're going to be looking for a home again immediately.

It kills me to say, but we just can't keep her with our daughter potentially in harm's way. :(

What a crappy outcome.
