Going forward, we are set pretty good regardless of where you stand on Jason Garrett.
I think the most crucial needs to build on this team is CB, DL, WR (need to find a better compliment to Dez than TW), and TE.

I know TE might be stretching it but do we have someone to take over for Written in a year? I like Swaim but can he do everything Written does?

Other needs may be RT (or guard if you wanna move Collins to RT), and LB

As often as it has been mentioned around here, it seems like the coaches have always had zero intention of ever trying Collins at RT, even if only for emergency situations. As far as the team is concerned, Collins might as well have never played RT in his life. Which kind of boggles my mind, considering that the ability to play multiple positions on the line seems to an asset to this staff.

However, the team must surely know something we don't here. Perhaps they've had him practice a little as an RT, and knew immediately that he would not work there in the NFL.

Swaim cannot do everything Witten does but he doesn't have to. The tight end qualifications that Swain or any other candidate need are good in-line blocking ability, solid route running, good hands and toughness. Everyone can't be a future Hall of Famer but his successor can reasonably be a good substitute.

I think Witten is the reason why none of the TE's drafted have been successful.

Id love Howard to be the 2nd TE.

He likely won't be available where we pick in the second round. I doubt we take him in the first.
But he and Bobby Humphreys are my pet cats as Ezekiel Elliott was last year.

I think O.J. Howard will be dynamic in the pros. He didn't get much acclaim his first two seasons because Saban uses his tight ends to block a lot. But when he got a pass or two, everyone saw how dynamic he was. And then last year's National Championship Game was his breakout game. I knew it all along because I've seen him previously.

He is the perfect tight end, as far as I'm concerned. He can handle the blocking duties and then some. Then, he is elusive and powerful in the open field.

We need pass rushers in the worst way, but if there's not one worth #28, I would not be upset if we took Howard, assuming he's available at our pick.

Is it his pass blocking that worries the coaching staff?

Who knows, I'm sure that Garrett or someone else has previously provided some reasoning for not trying him at RT, but I still can't imagine that he'd be any worse than whoever our current backup RT is at the very least.

That is why I think replacing Written may just be tougher than replacing Room was.

Replacing Witten boils down to drafting well, something the front office has had difficulty capitalizing upon at the tight end position since selecting Witten.

We better not use a 2nd rounder on a te! Lol

The forum would go into complete meltdown.
Having said that, I think O.J. Howard would be a steal in the second round, and I personally would have no problem with picking him in round 2.

I think we need to draft a lb also.

If Jaylon comes back healthy, we're set at LB. The SLB gets what, like 15 snaps a game?

Howard will be the first TE off the board.

Collins is playing LG, probably because they think he can be All-Pro there. He needs to work on pass protection but that comes with cohesion with the other guys and snaps.

Cleary did okay in his limited time at LT. He's a huge dude. We have him for 2017. He'll be 27 this offseason so maybe he's developed enough to be a candidate for RT.

Speaking of TE's, our safety coach was the DB coach for Michigan in 2015. He'll have the breakdown on the DE Taco, as well as the TE there that got injured, Butt. I don't know much about him but i'm sure they'll do their due diligence on him. If he falls I expect him to be in Dallas, for better or worse.

He's also going to have some insight on Peppers who has been steadily sliding down mocks. He could end up going in the same area as Shaq Thompson with some of the same concerns.

The only spot I might consider spending money on a big time free agent is CB given they're on the field for 100% of defensive snaps. Our defensive backfield depth really saved our bacon much of the season and we're potentially losing about 40% of it. I think Scandrick will be fine a year removed from his lost season and Brown looks promising but I'm not comfortable. Need more certainty at CB. Ideally we find a surefire starter and groom Brown to replace Scandrick in a couple years.

We're going to lose a number of free agents this year. Use cuts to fill spots instead of free agents to make sure we get the comp picks in '18. A few should be 4th round territory. Maybe a 3rd if some team goes crazy with Williams, Carr, or Leary.

Try to fill the DE need with a veteran cut like Connor Barwin, Cameron Wake, Pernell McPhee, etc. The free agents are fool's gold or certain to be tagged.

Same with WR. Someone like Eric Decker, Torrey Smith, Victor Cruz, etc. I don't want growing pains with a rookie WR. Don't panic. We just need to fill Williams' 500 yards. At worst, someone will shake loose around camp cuts.

Sign Wilcox. Butler and Kellen Moore might be so cheap we might as well sign them. Otherwise, let everyone test the market. Nobody is critical.

I'd like to keep T McClain but contract we gave Thornton last year sets the floor and McClain is a much better player. Yet, he's also too injury prone to trust with multi-million contract.

Within first four rounds, draft two DL.

Within first two rounds, draft CB. Pick up a NB later.

NO REDSHIRT DRAFT PICKS BEFORE DAY 3!!

Great stuff

I like Cordarelle Patterson for WR/KR and signing Mo, Wilcox and Butler on good deals

FA for a DE- mid level like you said and draft one early
CB also needs to be drafted early

AND 100% with you about gambles........stay in the 5th, 6th and 7th rounds for TEs and RBs and falling stars
