Loretta Swit, Hot Lips Houlihan of MASH has died

It's surprising that I don't think I've ever seen her in anything but M*A*S*H.

I can't imagine anyone playing the role of Margaret nearly as well. She definitely brought the character to life.
no one from MASH went on to do all that much in the industry afterwards. Winchester(David Ogden Stiers) was pretty busy but nothing that ever came close to that visibility

not sure if it was typecasting or they were limited or what

I am not certain if another actress could have played Sally Kellerman's character nearly as well. Both played a legendary character in the movies and television.

Now, both are gone. Time takes no prisoners.

Rest in peace, Mrs. Swit. Those who saw you and were entertained by you will never forget you. It sounds corny but I kinda feel like posting the M*A*S*H theme song here.

It was natural causes, so the song wouldn't really be appropriate.

huh. Not trying to derail the thread but I was referring to it honoring her television character. I would think that would be appropriate.

Certainly, it was an intro/ending theme for a Korean War based television show. However, the show was also a drama/comedy. And the theme was always somber. Someone passing is a somber event in my opinion.

Alan Alda did a lot of work after.

Mike Farrell did some work, including playing the father in Providence , for three years, I believe.

I've seen David Ogden Stiers occasionally.

Maclean Stevenson was busy for a while after his role in the show was over.

Other than that though, you're right, not a lot of work for most of them. I imagine there was a fear, by casting directors, that people would only see them as their M*A*S*H characters.

Do you know the name of the song? I'm not sure if the algorithm here would allow me to type it.

OOOOOH! I get it now but the show theme is instrumental. I have never heard the theme with lyrics.

Wait. Does it even have lyrics?

Perhaps I can offer some more clarification? I am referring to playing the song to honor Swit's passing just like any news show or 'in memorandum' announcement made (like the Emmy awards for example) was played after her other cast members died. For that reason, I believe the theme can be played without reflecting its actual song title.

I knew what you meant. I'm just thinking some people might mistakenly think the lyrics (yes, there are lyrics: "cause $#/$/@& is painless, it brings on many changes...", etc.) hint at the cause of death.

I remember seeing Jamie Farr (Klinger) doing some guest spots on TV Shows and game shows, but yeah definitely not the same visibility as MASH. Alan Alda did a ton of stuff, numerous guest appearances and reoccurring roles, a bunch of movies and hosted a Science show for quite awhile.

looking at what he did after MASH, Alda really got little attention in comparison.
