Losman joins UFL

The Associated Press reports former Buffalo Bills quarterback J.P. Losman signed Tuesday with the Las Vegas franchise in the United Football League, which kicks off its first season in October.

Losman, a first-round draft pick in 2004 out of Tulane, is the most notable player to sign with the fledgling UFL so far.

The Las Vegas team will be coached by former New York Giants coach Jim Fassel.

J.P. may find himself on the path of post-NFL infamy like that of Quincy Carter--that is, minus the drug use and months long lapses in judgment. Should he find himself as the only quarterback in a four team league with prior NFL starting experience and not succeed, he could end up smearing his NFL career even more.

He's in a good situation though. Fassel is a quality offensive coach and if he's going to be on any team in that league, he's in the right place. If he was with Haslett, Dennis Green or worse Ted Cottrell, then he'd have a tougher time.

Losman was not awful. He had streches over games in which he looked like he had something. He was in a crappy situation up there in Buffalo with a QB rotation of potentially solid QBs--the rotation preventing any of them from actually meeting that potential. Losman had injuries and then he was splitting time with Kelly Holcomb and then Trent Edwards. In 2006, his season was better than anything, for instance, Jason Campbell ever has done in DC.

I'm surprised a team would not want to bring him in at least for a competent backup. Hell, I would have taken him over Brad Johnson last year (I would not take him over Kitna, though).

I agree. I am surprised that no one picked him up as a backup but he still might be once some guys get hurt.

It is probably a personality thing. I even recall back when he was drafted by Buffalo (the trade up with Dallas) that he had an attitude that turned some teams off. Couple that with some noticeable gaffes (like the fumble that lost the Jets game last year) and it is not that hard to see how he could have fallen through the cracks. However, your point is well taken. Both he and Rex Grossman aren't great, but they could at least be okay as backups.

So right now they have JP Losman, Ken Dorsey, Tim Rattay and Brooks Bollinger. I wouldn't call them unknowns, they're just known to suck.

Chancers are that he'll get picked up somewhere before the season is over.

One stiff for two JAGs. Certainly one of the most inconsequential draft day deals in Dallas History.

I'm not saying it was groundbreaking.

But we got a starting DE for the last 3 years and will be next year, and Jones was absolutely electric for his first two years in the league. It also allowed us to gradually work in MBIII

I'll take those anyday for a no name QB thats now out of the league.

Maybe he can turn it around like Kerry Collins did as he got older & matured...

Well, I don't regret passing on Steven Jackson, Julius Jones was ruined by a mental funk and not by his abilities, I am still waiting for Marcus Spears to be dominant however and not simply serviceable as a starter.

2004 was a bad draft class but not because of the Losman trade.

Patrick Crayton stands alone as a starter.

Jacob Rodgers and Stephen Peterman never even played.

Nate Jones and Jacques Reeves were subpar defenders.

Julius Jones lost his starting job to Marion Barber and left for Seattle.

2004 goes down with 2002 as lost expectations, potential dashed by under performing.
