Loss of Gibbs + Pasqualoni = Brady James' fall?

How much of Brady James' struggles this year are due to James, and how much is due to Pasqueloni / loss of Gibbs? Our linebackers, especially in coverage, seem to be lost this year. Is that Pasqueloni?

The reason I ask is because he may become co-defensive coordinator. Does anyone know much about his defensive background and defense at Syracuse?

Could be...I don't know if anyone here would know for sure.

It seems he was lost early but when they decided that they were going to make the major move to the 3-4 he turned it around some, played enough to get that contract.

There is another thing to consider.

It is far from rare to see a player have a great year...when they know they are going to get a new contract.

But honestly who knows.

He has had one standout year...and he had two subpar years under Gibbs.

Just don't know.

Actually Vicent Brown is the new Middle LBs coach apparently. This is his first year and seems like they regressed down the stretch though, since they did play very good till about 10th game.

Vincent Brown? I didn't know that. What's Pasq's responsibility now--just outside linebackers?

I think he was responsible for overall LB core. But Vincent was primarily coaching inside LBs I believe or so I read.

Brady really started having issues when teams started spreading the base defense (3-4) out wide using 3 & 4 wides on 1st & 2nd down. But obviously it wasn't just Brady.

Last year I remember we started having trouble in the beginning of the season with teams doing the same thing-- remember Ware "whiffing" on Randy Moss? We then started to use the "nickel" more on 1st & 2nd downs. If you recall that's what we did to keep the Philly offense under control in the game played in Dallas.

Purcells is damned stubborn at times trying to force the 3-4 on this team and in some instances it just isn't working.

Did Gibbs sprinkle magical coverage dust on him? It must have been the secret "speed and agility" elixir he gave him before games.

maybe bradie wasn't that good to begin with

He's just a slugger-type run stopper who doesn't have the speed or, probably more importantly, the agility to cover athletic TEs and FBs.

We almost have to put Carpenter or some new acquisition there next year, or the same things will happen.

Ellis really isnt that important to the defense. We were the healthiest team in the league, losing 1 linebacker (who could only rush the passer) isnt going to hurt us THAT much. Not to mention, you guys thought we had problems covering the flats late in the year? Imagine Ellis one on one against Bush when we played them. We would have got toasted even worse. The Chargers lost LB after LB but still went 14-2.

Whoever said we got worse when they spread the field is right. Parcells makes stopping the run THE top priority on his front 7, and it can be seen. None of them have any coverage skills. All you have to do is flood their zone with a few short routes and a deep route. And unless we change our overall scheme of playing defense, or get some safeties or linebackers who are GREAT at covering, the same thing will happen next year. (I dont think a 3-4 defense will work with Cover 2 type linebackers though, so throw that idea out)

We weren't doing things to help our players succeed. If you've got a guy that isn't that great in coverage, you can help him tremendously by jamming the reciever he's suppose to cover at the line of scrimmage. Anyone notice how many times we ever jammed recievers at the LOS all year? Very rarely... especially TE's.

Bradie James was no better in coverage last year than he was this year. Its just that this year, teams recognized it and exploited that weakness, and, in typical fashion, we never did anything like adjust to stop them from doing that.

We stay in a Cover-2 cuz we're worried about the deep routes on the outside when the biggest hole in our defense was right in the middle and in the flat.

well let me just say that i completely disagree with you on the Ellis thing. Ellis may not have been a fantasy stud, putting up huge numbers...but what he was "THE PRUDENTIAL" of our defense...THE ROCK...He may not have had many sacks, but he did get pressure on the QB. He is outstanding against the run. He also forces turnovers. Ellis is a veteran, a lockerroom leader, and a leader on the field. He rarely makes mental errors.

To say that losing him was insignificant is foolish.

If you look at last year, when his minutes diminished....the defense started sucking. Then this year, we were working towards a dominant defense...then he gets injured and we proceed to get our butts handed to us on defense...letting scrubs have career nights (Karney), giving up huge passing games, huge rushing games, can't contain anyone on 3rd down, and not being able to cover the flats........(ELLIS OWNED THE FLATS)

So you can discredit Ellis all you want, but IMO it makes you look like you don't have a clue as to what you are talking about.....

ELLIS RULES
