Lost in the shuffle of the "incident".....has anyone ever seen a kickoff in the other teams end of the field before??? I know I haven't. Also, on that play, I thought it was rather smart to squibb it the way they did and pin them back on the 10 rather then boom it into the stands.

I've seen kickoffs from the 50, but not in the other territory like that. I was half hoping we'd try an onsides kick. Even if it failed it would at least be the same as a normal kickoff.

Yes, I agree it was smart. It would have been pointless to simply blast the kickoff into an unsuspecting fan who had just settled down with his halftime snack. If the ref had given us another 10 or 15 yards, someone might have gotten killed!!!

It would be the only way for Vandy to get a touchback on a kickoff.

I was hoping for a true onside kick attempt as well. Of course those have become even more difficult to convert due to the rule change limiting the number of players that can line up on each side of the ball during a kickoff.

Also, I doubt if Vandy knows how to execute an onsides kick. Those take practice and we all know what he thinks about that.

That was my thought, too. When you are kicking off from the opponents 40 yard line, even a 10 yard kick doesn't give them any real advantage. It would have been a perfect time for an onside kick. If it worked, it puts you in place to really stick a fork in them early.

Regarding this rule change... who was it last week, Buffalo I think, who had a genius onsides kick formation. Line up 5 guys on each side, but bunch them all up next to the kicker. Kick the ball down the middle and have all 10 guys run at that guy in the middle.

Just goes to show you coaches will come up with ways around the rules. Next offseason they will make a rule outlawing this formation.

Yes, I was thinking that also. But the squib kick worked. But an onside kick, recover, then hit them deep on the first play for a TD. Now that would have been nice.

To prevent injuries of the overload to any one side. A new rule this year says you must have at least 4 guys to either side.

I think it was the Bills. That was the way we ran the onside kick on my highschool team.
