I have a perception that there are a lot of veterans with productive years left that are getting released due to salary cap concerns. I wonder if there will be any long term repercussions from the players union. It will be awhile before they can renegotiate the collective bargaining agreement but I seem to remember some kind of opt out scenario. Anyone in the know about that?

Probably not any different than any other year.
There are bound to be years when a higher number of veteran players get released. As in any cycle of events, depending on contract / salary cap issues.

But yes, I would think the NFLPA may want to look at this to protect them somehow in the future. Like more guaranteed money upfront, as most contracts with high dollars at the end doesn't really mean anything if they can save by simply releasing them.

The only real solution is guaranteed contracts and it will never happen in the NFL.

Well. The NFLPA made the deal so there was minimum payout from each team.
So what can they complain about????
Money has to be spent.

Seems like that Vet minimum is working against them.

Yes and no.

Something in the middle.

I don't like how it handcuffs mlb teams... And quite frankly it promotes laziness or doing "just enough"

It's becoming more and more of a business for all involved. How long before corporate logos are splashed everywhere like NASCAR?

I don't think it is salary cap concerns as much as cash money concerns. With the rookie wages being capped, teams are playing a lot more younger guys and getting rid of mid level vets. The rookie cap was supposed to have the opposite effect, with the vets getting more money. The teams are just pocketing the savings.

I think the only way to get the owners to keep up with the ever increasing salary cap is to expand the rosters. They could add 8-10 players to game day rosters and at least 5-7 to the 53 man rosters. This would help with injuries, Thurs night games and the potential 2 extra weeks some owners want to add.

Its ridiculous man. The rivalries between teams and great teams of all time can no longer be built. It was better when players stayed with their teams for their careers for the most part.
