The job he did at Notre Dame following the lost years with Gerry Faust was amazing. He and Vinny Cerrato brought in ridiculous recruiting classes between 1987 and 1993 that transformed the program. In spite of his physical stature, his teams reflected incredible toughness on the field, and as an Irish fan, it was an amazing time to watch the program.

His best job, though, was in the Orange Bowl in 1978, when he suspended three starters prior to Arkansas' game against a prime Oklahoma team, including his starting running backs (pretty important in the veer offense that he ran), and they went on to rout Oklahoma 31-6.

That game was also the last game that Barry Switzer and Larry Lacewell coached together in.

RIP Coach Holtz.

RIP Coach. Rest in Paradise. You made it. Huge loss . Great hc and even better man.
This covers it for me

Not an ND fan by any stretch

But nonetheless I had immense respect for Coach Holtz professionally as a coach, and more importantly as a high character man and patriot

We need Lou Holtz types everywhere in this world. In coaching, in business, in classrooms, in families. He will be missed. May he rest in peace
