Just hours after Greg Schiano was ousted in Tampa, former Bears coach Lovie Smith emerged as a strong candidate to take over the Buccaneers.

League executives informed of the Bucs process have told NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport that there is talk of bringing together the old Tampa group, including former Bears general manager Jerry Angelo, former Seahawks general manager Tim Ruskell and others.

We can only hope that Rod made a bond with the team that would make it possible for him to turn down the chance to reunite with Lovie.

So does that mean the Bucs will only need to conduct 1 interview, or does it work both ways...? Inquiring minds want to know.

The fact that tampa will have a much better hc than we do.

come on as much as I like smith I do not think he is a championship coach. he only made the playoffs three times maybe more I think with the bears and lucked into one superbowl. most of his teams were .500 teams overall. smith is a great coordinator but a average head coach. also his offenses were nothing to brag about. I bet if he is tampa bay head coach he might make the playoffs with them but they will not go far.

You can move on to any promotion you want. As far as I know, it's just not a parallel move.

LATERAL OPPORTUNITIES

Assistant coach - to - Non Head Coach opportunities

Note: "promotions" to coordinator level are NOT promotions under this policy; a coach is either an Assistant Coach or a Head Coach, period.

If RM is under contract, he can't leave unless allowed by Jones or for a HC job. Moving to DC would be enough to breach the contract with the Cowboys. He will be here next year if we want him to be, if he had more than a 1 year contract, which I don't know how long his contract was for.

Yeah, Denim CHicken pointed this out and I googled a little bit. Man, young assistant coaches can get hosed in this context.
