Virtually all long-snappers make ball adjustments before the snap; as long as they don’t lift the ball clear of the ground, or motion it back towards the QB, it’s tolerated by the officials.

In 58yrs of watching NFL ball, I can’t ever recall a penalty being called because the long-snapper moved the ball slightly to adjust his grip.

My take is, one of the Washington D coaches thought up the scenario where the refs might call a penalty IF he had several of his DL jump offside en masse when the veteran LP made his usual adjustment. The gamble wasn’t a game-loser for Wash; as a made FG woulda simply sent the game into OT.

Even though, IMHO, we got screwed, I’ll bet the league office and the rest of the teams are now thinking this situation over — pro and con — and how to deal with it going forward.

The league office is happy. The Cowboys got screwed once and now we go back to normal.
Don’t think so. All long-snappers move the ball to some degree before the snap. But I’ve never seen several guys jump and a penalty called before.

Let’s watch to see if other teams now try this ploy (multiple players jumping offsides) in a similar situation, as the snapper makes his inevitable adjustments.

I’ll bet you anything you’d like we won’t see it again.

They may even offer up their patented “clarification”

You could be right, but I’ve watched the replay and not only was LP’s adjustment normal for him, the offsides jump looked somewhat coordinated.

Time will tell...

Payne looked guilty ** from what I saw but you could be onto something. A free icing at worst.

Yes, I'm certain Washington planned to jump off-sides. It forced the refs to call it. Washington likely alerted the refs before the snap that LP might move the ball.

The Cowboys ran the ball into the middle of the Washington DL on the previous play on a day where they were not getting anything there. They should have tried harder to get more yards because the Field Goal was not a gimme even without the penalty.

They lost time by not spiking the ball according to Romo. They timeout took longer than a spike per Romo. Garrett has done this many times in these types of situations because he has had the luxury of good kickers; however, it's a dumb coaching move, IMO.
