Virtually all long-snappers make ball adjustments before the snap; as long as they don’t lift the ball clear of the ground, or motion it back towards the QB, it’s tolerated by the officials.
In 58yrs of watching NFL ball, I can’t ever recall a penalty being called because the long-snapper moved the ball slightly to adjust his grip.
My take is, one of the Washington D coaches thought up the scenario where the refs might call a penalty IF he had several of his DL jump offside en masse when the veteran LP made his usual adjustment. The gamble wasn’t a game-loser for Wash; as a made FG woulda simply sent the game into OT.
Even though, IMHO, we got screwed, I’ll bet the league office and the rest of the teams are now thinking this situation over — pro and con — and how to deal with it going forward.
