Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Indianapolis Colts, is the scene of the NFL Scouting Combine. It snowed overnight and the wind-chill factor was 8 degrees, but it's cozy inside this state-of-the-art facility. (The Birmingham News / Don Kausler Jr.)INDIANAPOLIS -- Greetings from Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, where the annual NFL Scouting Combine has gotten under way.

I'm here to report on the 10 Alabama players who will be here, as well as players from Auburn, Troy and North Alabama.

This "event" started Wednesday, but the news media is welcome today through Sunday.

The actual workouts don't start until Saturday, but those are closed to the news media, even though some of it can be seen on the NFL Network.

Players and various NFL coaches, general managers and other executives are available for interviews.

Today, offensive linemen, tight ends, kickers, punters and long snappers will be available for interviews. That means we should see Alabama guard Mike Johnson, tight end Colin Peek and place-kicker Leigh Tiffin.

Only one player is here purely as a kick returner: LSU's Trindon Holliday. He was asked if he considers himself a track star who also plays football or a football player who also runs track. Surprise, surprise. He said he's a fast football player.

LSU billed him as the fastest player ever to play college football. He said he hopes to run the 40-yard dash this week in 4.23 seconds. He was asked if he picked that number because Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson, considered the fastest player in the NFL, ran a 4.24 when he came to the NFL Combine. Holliday grinned and said no. The NCAA 100-meter dash champion said his best 40-yard dash time -- 4.21 seconds -- came a couple weeks ago.

Holliday, who was listed at 5-foot-5 and 161 pounds by LSU, said he was measured at 5-5 1/4 this morning.
