LSU Pro Day draws 24 NFL teams
Posted: March 16th, 2009 | NFL.com Staff | Tags: Darry Beckwith, Demetrius Byrd, Herman Johnson, LSU, Tyson Jackson

The LSU Pro Day was held in Baton Rouge on Monday with 24 NFL teams attending, including the entire Saints coaching staff. A total of 15 NFL position coaches attended, including defensive line, offensive line, linebacker and defensive back coaches.

One of the hottest prospects from LSU, DE Tyson Jackson (6-4 1/8, 296 pounds), did 20 repetitions of 225 pounds on the bench press and participated in position drills, but otherwise stood on his times from the NFL combine. Another top prospect, LB Darry Beckwith (6-0 1/8, 234 pounds), put up 40-yard dash times of 4.70 and 4.63 and he participated in position drills, but aside from that he stood on his combine times..

G Herman Johnson (6-7 1/8, 356 pounds), an intriguing player due to his incredible size, had a 26 1/2-inch vertical leap with a 7-foot, 10-inch broad jump and times of 5.01 in the short shuttle and 8.58 in the three-cone drill. He had 24 reps on the bench press.

A surprise performance came from DE Kirston Pittman (6-2 5/8, 250 pounds), who didn’t attend the combine. He turned in 40 times of 4.69 and 4.72, and had a 30 1/2-inch vertical and an 8-foot, 8-inch broad jump. He had a 4.45 time in the short shuttle and a 7.64 time in the three-cone drill. He put up 28 reps on the bench press.

Players ran indoors on FieldTurf. In all, 15 players worked out at an extremely well-organized event that went quickly. Here are other notables:

WR Demetrius Byrd (6-0 1/2, 196 pounds) had times of 4.47 and 4.50 in the 40. He had a 35 1/2-inch vertical and a 9-foot, 9-inch broad jump with times of 4.52 in the short shuttle and 7.08 in the three-cone drill. He did not lift.

FS Curtis Taylor (6-2 1/4, 207 pounds) ran the 40-yard dash with times of 4.52 and 4.55, and he stood on the rest of his numbers from the combine.

FB Quinn Johnson (6-1 1/4, 250 pounds) had times of 4.72 and 4.75 in the 40, and produced a 7.65 time in the three-cone drill. He stood on the rest of his numbers from the combine.

yes, it looks like Houck

here is a close up of Houck on cowboys website;

thing to remember about Houck, he likes offensive linemen with huge big rear ends, (in other words players that can run block with heavy anchor on the lower part of his body)

41gy, good job looking,

Thanks. I thought it was him, but I wanted another set of eyes to back me up. I was digging on Johnson's pro day and ran into the LSU site. I guess "The House" is on the radar. That is pretty good, isn't it.:)

Not a lot of reps on the bench for a guy that size, but I would imagine at over 6'7" he has really long arms which makes it harder to do a lot of reps. But, long arms does make you a better blocker.

yes he is a very good run blocker, in fact he started his freshman year, and he is adept at pass blocking too, now with losing the weight, getting with a nutrionist, he can only improve, and he hates to lose too,

was pretty good watching you did on the photos 41gy,

i do think the cowboys are going after a big ole offensive linemen, either at OG that can play center some too, so keep your eyes open

it's the long arms and that fact that Herman is more baby fat than muscle

thats the part i dont know about jerryadvocate the baby fat;

i do know he has extremely long arms which makes it difficult to bench press alot;

not giving an excuse, just harder with long arms, but at same time thats what you want in an offensive linemen long arms, mean, nasty, and big

thing i am pointing to is the showing of offensive line coach Houck there at LSU, he loves big offensive nasty linemen (aka erik williams, larry allen) with big rear ends that can move the line of scrimmage with good run blocks and herman johnson is adept and polished at pass blocking too, now is he a ROT, dont think so, but at OG yes

I don't think we're going to have a shot at him unless we move up quite a bit in the 2nd round at least. This cat is going to be gone by the end of the 1st, early part of the 2nd.

i dont think so, i think because of the heavy weight herman johnson was at, the light bench press (which he did increase a little but not awhole lot), herman willl go anywhere from the middle of the 2nd round to top of 3rd round.
