He was a good player for a long time. It's too bad someone like him never got to play for a good team.

It always sucks to see someone forced to retire due to an injury.

I agree. I don't care what team they have the misfortune to play for. These guys lay their bodies on the line and I don't think nearly enough people realize the toll it takes.

He was and is a class act. I hope that any injuries can be healed over time. One of the best players on our team for the whole decade

while that is true, they are amply rewarded financially for the toll that it takes, high risk but high reward

Wow...That sucks for the Skins.

Guy was a good player. Also was a class act and always restructured his contract to help the team each year.

He might be a skin but that sucks that he has to retire due to injury.

Gotta give the guy credit. His knees had been in rough shape for awhile and he played a lot of years at a high level despite that. Sure, he got paid a lot of money, but guys don't play that long with those knees without loving the game.

There's no reward ample enough to replace what can be lost by these guys in a worst case scenario. Ask Daryl Stingley, Mike Utley, Chris Byrd or a host of others if they would trade their salary for what they lost to paralysis.

How about you ask Korey Stringer's widow or children if they would like to have him back?

Money isn't everything. It isn't even close to the most important thing about playing the game.

Also, Samuels has officially only said that he will evaluate things at the end of the year. But he has told other players that he is retiring. He just won't announce it now because he may lose this season's salary by doing so.

When the words neck and spine are thrown out there, the best thing to do is retire.

Samuals is making the right decission.

using four extreme examples is beneath you my liege. money is the only reason the majority play, not like they could make that coin elsewhere, oh they pay lip service to love of the game etc but few would kill themselves physically if they weren't getting good financial reward (and before you state what about practice squad guys, they still make decent money and have the hope of making it in the bigs)

These guys are in their 20's when they start the pro game, and generally don't have much appreciation for the real risks. Was reading a report on a study of effects of contact sports, and it found an increase in dementia. Something like a seven times greater chance of dementia, and a higher onset of early age dementia. All those blows to the head. There's a reason the NFL is getting all cranky about the head shots.

It's a blood sport, and the payout is, and should be, higher because of it.

Achilles Choice, in variation; a longer more comfortable, calmer life, or a short, violent career with a chance for glory, and the problems afterwards.

Good luck to Samuals. Those knee replacement surgeries are real painful.

He was good but he never was the dominant apex of his position he was touted as coming out of college, he and Arrington were supposed to make the Skins instant contenders.

Arrington showed flashes of something and then turned into the new Bosworth.

Samuels was steady, reliable but unspectacular.

:laugh2:

Do you even realize that most players don't make the "big money" that you said is so worth it? Don't be delusional about the draw of the money making it worth it. Plenty of these guys drain their lives away after the game.
