we already tried the above 6'3" free safety

he's just not built to play the position, he's going to have a hell of a time tackling being so damn tall

I don't buy into that as a FS. He doesn't have to be an impact safety. He just has to be able to drag guys down and he can do that.

no thanks!

I agree...not sure what the enfatuation is that people here in CZ have over this guy...not saying he definitely wont be a good player, but he isnt the 2nd coming of Lester Hayes or anything

maybe its a smoke screen, but i still would rather have duke robinson, i want a player that has played the position for awhile and can be a monster

i think duke robinson is that player

OK, that's fine with me but I will say this. If you thiink Smith is the same kind of player Hamlin is, I think your going to be in for a surprise. The two are not really alike at all.

I guess we can agree to disagree.

Would Smith be that much different then from Pat Watkins? He is both taller AND faster than Smith. Not to mention about as good in man coverage, not a strength of either.

At least Watkins will stick his body into a tackle, Smith obviously disdains the position. Using a high pick to on a guy to play a position he does not want to play is going to be trouble. I recall another guy with the same height, better speed (4.3) and much better in man coverage who refused to move to safety too, he ended being cut (Peter Hunter). Not a good way to use resources IMO.

I can not speak for everybody but I can say that I don't love Smith at 51. There are other players I would rather have but the thread is in response to the article. If Smith is indeed the player we covet, then it doesn't really matter what I would like. If he's there, he's who we will take. He's not a bad player, by any means IMO. I would rather a guy who is happy to play anywhere but hey, it is what it is.

I think he projects to Safety but he wants to play CB. It's really too bad too. There was once Free Safety for the Broncos named Steve Atwater and he was very simular in build and stature. Atwater was probably a bigger hitter but I think that Smith could be that kind of Free Safety if he just decided to be a Free Safety.

He's not going to have much of a say in it. Of course he wants to play CB, but so does every other DB. The money is much better for a starting corner than a safety. If we like him at FS, he'll just have to live with it. The Atwater comparison is interesting. I completely forgot about that guy. He sure was a player.

I dont think Smith is much like Hamlin at all, but I also dont think Sean Smith is anywhere near as good as some in here make him out to be.

I wouldnt touch him with our early picks.

Sean Smith will make multiple probowls as a Safety. He's got the reach of a 6"7 guy and always sticks his hand in for pass breakups. He might get beat but his long arms make up for it.It's deceptive. His hands are ridiculously good. Better than your average WR in the NFL.

How connected is Mac when he can't get the player's name or school right?

Like 41, I'm not high on Smith as a corner. Especially not for a team that's not primarily a cover-2 defense, which we aren't.

They liked him 2 months ago.

A lot has changed since then.

They are not going to draft Sean Hill ciwoskiw Smith from Oregon/Utah/Neverneverland.

This time of year is so fun.

What's the truth?
What's fiction?
What's misinformation?
What players really failed their DTs?
Do we really like so-and-so?

I'll admit....I haven't seen a lot of Sean Smith. I am impressed with his measurables...which is something I usually try to stay away from. I would love to see us find a safety that could finally complete our secondary. It seems we always have one HUGE weak link back there....We'd gone for years without a compliment to Newman....then it was a compliment to Roy....then it was replacing Roy....

I am aware (read my earlier post). The problem with that is that the best DBs in a Tampa2 are typcially the safeties. The CBs in that scheme usually don't make the big money because they are not nearly the quality of CBs other schemes demand. It's kinda pointless to me but then again, I think he should be a safety so what do I know?

I was responding to your response to my post, not any of your earlier posts. I am so confused now.

I like that last line... :)

If we do like him, it has to be purely as a safety. And I personally wouldn't draft a guy like that who didn't want to play the position. IMO we're looking for guys that like to play and like to hit, and a guy who doesn't really care for the position doesn't fit those criteria.

If I really had to guess, and it's just a hunch, I bet we go after a more physical safety like Chung or even Chip Vaughn. I think this idea of getting a corner-like S might be a bit of a smokescreen.

could be, remember what jimmy johnson said, he used the media to let the players know what was going on, like one time when he was talking to the media jimmy said; right now talking to you media people im having a nice meeting with the players,

even john madden said he used the media for his own purposes sometimes to get things across to the players or to other teams

thats something that wade phillips should know by now, but he doesnt yet for some strange reason;

I read this off Packers.com This was what I was talking about above. Here the scouts talk about Smith having trouble in transition and needing to fit a certain scheme or be a safety.

♦ 5. Sean Smith, Utah 6-3 ½, 214 2:

Junior entry who redshirted his fresman year and then moved from running back to receiver to cornerback. Intriguing because he’s unusually big for a cornerback and could compete for balls with all the tall receivers in the league. Started 22 of 26 games the last two seasons and had 16 passes defended and nine interceptions in his career. Has long, 34 5/8-inch arms to go with his tall frame. Ran the 40 in 4.58 seconds at the combine and had a vertical jump of 34 inches. Cornerbacks his height have trouble making it because they’re usually not quick enough in and out of their breaks, and that could an issue with Smith, who also is unpolished. “Finesse guy, struggles transitioning, takes a long time to gather and get out of things,” one scout said. “He has some upside because of his size, but I don’t see him as a (great)-type athlete. You’d almost hope he could play safety but he’s not physical enough. I think he’s probably a late second-round guy.” Lack of experience and frame to add weight makes some scouts think he could develop in a good bump corner over time. “Raiders, Green Bay does a lot of that, turn and run and press,” another scout said. “That’s what he does. He’s got to fit the scheme, but he has value definitely.”

And I'm still peeved they moved the thing back a few hours and only the first two rounds are on Saturday now.

I guess at least Sunday will be fun, though.
