Machota: One year later, a progress report on Cowboys' 'three first-round picks'

Shortly after a 38-minute news conference to announce the signing of La'el Collins last May, Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett stood in a Valley Ranch hallway, chatting with reporters about the young talent the team had acquired over the previous week.

In Collins, Byron Jones and Randy Gregory, the Cowboys found a way to land three of the top 20 players on their draft board.

"We regarded each of these guys as first-round players, so certainly we feel fortunate," Garrett said that day. "We have helped our football team. Now it's time to go to work."

Here's a look at how the group some called "three first-round picks" performed during their rookie seasons...

Dallas has nailed their last two drafts in 1st & 2nd rounds.

1st rounders:
Byron Jones (2015)
Collins (projected 2015 1st rounder)
Zach Martin (2014)

2nd rounders:
Demarcus Lawrence (2014)
Randy Gregory (2015)

That's an usually high success rate.

Will the growth in the positional quality, overcome the declining potential in a franchise quarterback? No one questions Tony Romo's ability; they do question his ability to remain on the carpet.

Personally,I don't want him on the carpet. I want him upright. I think he has every chance to do that, but they need to go ahead and put the plate on his collarbone.

Agreed. They need to do something, because that's a pretty weak collarbone.

Without reading the article, I'd give it a great (Collins), good (Jones) and an incomplete (Gregory).

Agreed.

Collins is a stud.

Byron has massive potential. I love his coverage skills, instincts and athleticism. Put him at FS and watch him beast it out.

It's easy to see Grego's potential, but that ankle injury was a killer. I anticipate him to be much better in 2016.

Dude I'm willing to cut Byron Jones some slack because he's a rookie but there were times this season where he was atrocious. You guys are going overboard.
