Mack Brown assesses BCS announcement

November 30, 2008 8:21 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Tim Griffin

Texas coach Mack Brown knew that a good team would be left out of the Big 12's title game when the three-team tie in the South Division was settled by BCS standings.

"Unfortunately, in this situation, it was us," Brown said after learning that his team had been nosed out by Oklahoma for the championship-game position, despite beating the Sooners in a game earlier this season.

"It is what it is," Brown said. "We don't like it, we don't agree with it or think it's fair, but like anything else, we'll handle it and move forward."

The Longhorns will become only the second team in the history of the conference to beat both title game representatives earlier in the same season -- Oklahoma and Missouri. Texas turned the trick in 2006 when the Longhorns beat the Sooners and Nebraska.

"I'm really disappointed for our kids that two teams we beat this season will be playing for the Big 12 championship," Brown said. "I'll try to explain it to them, but most importantly, my message will be that you've done enough to put yourself in position to play for the conference championship, you had a great season and there still is a lot out there to play for.

Most BCS observers have speculated there is virtually no way the Longhorns will get left out of a BCS bowl with an 11-1 record. If favored Oklahoma wins the Big 12 championship over Missouri, the Longhorns likely will be headed for the Fiesta Bowl for a bowl game against either Utah or Ohio State.

"We'll wait and see how everything plays out and where the system sends us, then be ready to play our best game of the year wherever that is," Brown said. "I do appreciate all of the respect many of the poll voters and fans gave to our season and the importance they placed on the head-to-head matchup in the end. But, unfortunately, it was not enough."

Brown also proposed a rule change that would alter how the Big 12 employs BCS standings in the future in the case of three-way ties.

"Since this situation has never happened before in the Big 12, I think the conference should follow the lead of all of the other BCS leagues with championship games [ACC/Conference USA/Mid-American/SEC] in how they settle three-way ties," Brown said. "I think their systems are fairer and give more credit to how the two highest-ranked teams performed against each other on the field."

If that system had been in place, Texas Tech would have been thrown out because of having the lowest BCS ranking among the three South Division tri-champions. The Texas-Oklahoma deadlock would then have been decided by a head-to-head meeting which the Longhorns would have won because of their 45-35 triumph Oct. 11 in Dallas.

No offense but I dont see the reason this is being posted. We all know Mack was crying the same song and dance all week.

Quick - someone go get the feelings of Florida's Urban Meyer.

Anyone have their finger on the pulse of coach Leach and how he feels about all of this? It probably should be posted as well. Make sure you make a seperate thread about it all.

Dallas, I honestly don't think Mack is conducting himself in a manner that's any different or any less professional than what Stoops would be doing if this had happened to the Sooners instead of the Longhorns. He owed it to not only the fans but to his players as well to do everything within his power to ensure that UT is put in the best position possible. Why you think that this is "crying" is silly, especially when you go back the last few weeks and listen to the countless times Stoops kept "crying" about why the voters should put Tech ahead of UT whenever the head-to-head argument was brought up regarding the Longhorns beating OU. This is what head coaches do.

Regardless, your team won out in the end anyway. So why would you even care?;)

It bothers me he is allowed to do it during the Oklahoma game. I would be beside myself w/ embarrassment if Stoops did that during a Longhorn game.

That was classless imho.

Be it Mack or anyone.

All of these coaches knew the system before the season started. Why do you have to wait until you might not make it in before you start crying a river?

I dont get it.

I didn't see it so I can't make a fair assessment about what he said but I will tell you that it's not like Coach Brown got his feathers all ruffled and decided to "drunk-dial" ABC at halftime to be heard. This was the media's doing from the get-go. They kill for this kind of stuff and will do anything to stir the pot if it will help their ratings. The studio offerred him a soapbox to plead his case during halftime on a nationally televised game and he took advantage of it. Hell, could you blame him? Could anyone, considering Texas was fixing to be the team on the outside looking in? Had roles been reversed and UT was playing the Aggies on Saturday night during primetime, with OU having already played OSU on turkey day, and the network made the same offer to Stoops to come on at halftime, do you honestly believe that he would pass it up? Of course he wouldn't. It would be crazy not to - especially when each team has a strong case to be in the Big XII Championship and it's thisclose to call and the decision could swing either way.

FWIW, to be completely fair, if you want to provide me a copy of the actual interview, I'll check it out and see if your point has any validity. But to be honest, knowing the type of person Mack Brown is, unless he jumps up on the chair and starts screaming that it's not fair while throwing a temper tantrum, I'm going to have a hard time believing that he was actually "crying" during halftime.

One more thing. I have mad respect for Coach Stoops. When it comes to a game plan, the man is a football genius. Given both coaches track record, each one very successful with the program they're with, why do you have such a hard time reciprocating the same respect to Coach Brown?

I've learned over the years that if I open my mouth a little wider, I could actually fit both feet in it :D:

"Stoops pointed to his team's strong non-conference schedule, which included Big East champion Cincinnati and a 10-win TCU team.

He also noted his decision to quit campaigning (mostly) for his team early last week. Stoops said he declined a chance to campaign for his team during Texas' game with Texas A&M on ESPN. Brown accepted an invitation to appear Saturday during the Oklahoma-Oklahoma State game."

Looks like I owe you an apology, Dallas. So please accept it for what it's worth. I can't say that I agree with this but I'm too tired to go into any further discussion.

Tomorrow perhaps...nite all.

kind of lame that the only reason OU is in the big 12 game is because the Big 12 committee is too stupid to explore all possibilities when creating the tiebreakers.

SEC and ACC know what's up.

OU fans are a joke i've heard stoops "campaigning" in the last few week as well, thing is you probably agree with him and ignore it while when Brown does it he's a classless whiner,...

I would love to see how some of you would have dealt with being a coach of a team left out of a championship game to watch 2 teams you beat play for it when your records where identical. Doubt you'd all be taking the moral high ground like you are now then, would have loved to see UT lose to OU this year only to get the nod to play in the Big 12 championship just to see the very same people justifying this now cry foul.

WAH WAH WAH.

You want to talk to a team that was cheated several times look at Penn State in the 70's. I think they went unbeaten 3 times and never got whiff of a shot at the NC.

Well since you bring it up, um yeah. I would take the high road. I knew how this whole pile of BCS crap played out for the most part. I would feel screwed but I never would take it to the level such as yourself calling out another team's fans and outright assuming every one of us would be whining.

yeah, like '69 when the Cotton Bowl begged Joe Pa to come play Texas and settle the Championship on the field and he wouldn't do it. WAH WAH WAH indeed.

Personally, I think OU is playing better and probably has a better shot at becoming National Champions, but then again. OU lost to Texas and that is crystal clear in my book of who should have moved forward if you're ONLY considering those two teams. Texas Tech should be in the mix too. If you use BCS rankings then they are out of the picture, but personally, I think the BCS rankings are by far the stupidest thing I've ever seen. There should be a playoff PERIOD.

While you're doing that, Mack, you might as well explain to your "kids" how a team that beat you and has the same record as you, also isn't playing in the title game and isn't whining incessantly about it.

Kids, Tech sucks away from Lubbock (except for Kyle Field) so they don't belong, if we would have been *** raped like Tech, we wouldn't be saying a word. Understand kids? Yes sir, it's really simple.

:laugh2:

That's alright. Watching the Horns excruciatingly lose on the "last play of the game," as Mack likes to say, was the next best thing.
