Jon Kitna was right about Bradie James at the time

One of the great things about Jon Kitna signing with the Cowboys was that it gave us an excuse to rehash the time he talked trash about Bradie James.
"There were some times that we were watching on film before we played Dallas that we really felt like No. 56, some times I don't know that he knew where he was at," Kitna said, among other unflattering things, about James during an interview with a Seattle radio station days after the Lions ended their 3-13 2006 season by lighting up the Cowboys.
This made for great fun the week the Cowboys traveled to Detroit the next year. A post from this here blog containing Kitna's most inflammatory comments was posted on a bulletin board outside the Cowboys' locker room. James got all hot and bothered, declaring: "I'm going to talk it before and back it up." Kitna backpedaled like a cornerback during a conference call with the Valley Ranch media, saying he was just kidding around with some guys on his hometown radio station. James refused to shake Kitna's hand during the captains' midfield meeting before the game, but they squashed their beef after the Cowboys' defense stunk up Ford Field to force Tony Romo and Co. to bail them out in the final seconds.
Of course, Kitna wants no part of opening that can of worms again now that he's joining James with the Valley Ranch Circus.
"He proved last year that's not true about him," Kitna said, referring to his criticism of the inside linebacker. "He was a Pro Bowl-caliber player all year last year. I don't suspect there will be any issue. But we already talked about that, so I don't think that's going to be a problem."
But before we move on, let me point out that Kitna's comments about James were on the money at the time. It's strange to hear a quarterback be so frank about an opposing player, but Kitna's brutally honest comments were accurate.
James stunk like a rotting corpse during the 2006 season, and he covered about as well as one, too. Heck, even Wade Phillips thought so.
Phillips initial impression of James: "We've got a linebacker here that can't play, and we need to replace him."
That quote is from the Cowboys Kickoff Luncheon in August, back when Jerry Jones allowed Phillips to open his mouth. Phillips meant it as a compliment in his own weird way, talking about how James had proven his worth.
A lighter version of James was significantly better in 2007. Then he had his best season in 2008. But Kitna was right when he criticized 2006 Bradie James, and I strongly encourage the Cowboys' new backup quarterback to continue providing brutally honest, accurate bulletin-board material in the future.
