Mailbag: Evaluating Trysten Hill

He is young and a developmental player... If it took D-Law 4 years to emerge, it will take Hill some time to develop as well. Very few "instant impact" players in the NFL. That said-- you can see that Hill has great athleticism. He needs to grow in understanding the NFL game, as well as developing core strength and an anchor to not get pushed around.

Gonna be a couple years before we can determine what this kid is at the NFL level. We have been spoiled by a series of great first round picks that have stepped in and contributed. This pick was never about the short term impact-- but about having a guy that can grow into an elite disruptor at the 3Tech.

Yep people forget, he was a second round pick and like you said with Dlaw it will take some years to bring it all together... DT have way more responsibility than DE

Yup. Sometimes his job is to occupy blockers so someone else can get to the QB. Sometimes he's supposed to get a push up the middle to give the DEs a chance to get at the QB.

Yes, just like Crawford, which I rag on at times. But he does the dirty work to allow the De's to do their job.

Lol they are praising him for keeping his pad level down and playing every snap. Lol is this pop warner? The kid was meh didn't screw up too badly and didn't make any plays. I guess that's a good start for his first game let's hope he can improve sooner rather than later because we definitely need help inside.

Sound like he did better than most on here want others to believe.

They mostly talk about his effort, which is pretty faint praise. But he's going to take time to develop. I don't worry about linemen on either side until they've been through a full NFL offseason. He's not a Taco pick, a one-year wonder as a senior who graded out really poorly. He's a guy with the physical tools and effort level who fell because of the weird situation with his coaches. I was never optimistic about Taco, but I am about Trysten.

i liked him. Good start. I dont expect 15 sacks in his debut like some around here. He most likely did what was asked of him.

Question: How does/will Trysten compare the Maliek Collins’ in his rookie season? Still too early to say, I imagine.

Maliek came into an easier situation with just Tyrone Crawford and Jack Crawford as potential 3T, so he started 14 games with 5 sacks and 23 combined tackles. Maliek was a more polished 3T since Nebraska at the time ran a similar defense to Marinelli's. Marinelli also knew the staff well since he's from there. Irving was there but he was playing DE at that point and it was early in his development.

Got no problem with the kid - he's a 2-3 year project...

My thing is how do we improve the position now - SB windows don't stay open very long - this is the same D- line that got manhandles vs the Rams.

So, two employees of the Dallas Cowboys evaluate him that he improved on keeping his pad level down, which was an issue for him previously?

Yep, I'm convinced. He's legit.

Seems to have a good attitude. Very coachable. This bodes well for him. He has the physical ability to be very good.
