Mailbag: trade down from 12 to add picks

great read and I love the analysis of the top 100 picks.

Honestly, i would be happy if they traded back a bit and picked up another top 100 pick, and then used some of their lower end picks to get another top 100. If they could walk away with 5 players in the top 100 that would be huge for the team.

They have to look at this as a two year project so they dont need "bodies" they need quality bodies...much rather have fewer picks of quality players than a huge volume of dart throws.

Agree 100%

A slight trade down, and then package some of those 5th through 7th round picks to trade back up.
They have 7 picks in those later rounds to do so.

My fear is, as they always seem to do this. They want a player, usually ends up being a reach in the 5th. So they trade a future 5th, if not a 4th, and current 6th to get him. And may get a future 7th in return.

I think Jerry makes trades just to make trades at times. Then tell us how they got value.
Beebe may be the only one that has worked out so far. And even now, some want Hoffman to be the C.

It really does depend on who is there for me.

If one of the blue chippers (Jeanty, Graham, Hunter, Carter) are there then you just take them and be done with it. All those guys will walk in and immediately have a huge impact.

But they won’t be, and we can argue all day about guys like Williams, Warren, Tet, Golden…

If it's true that they are targeting a WR with the first pick, then it depends on how they view them. If they really like one more than the others and he is available at 12 - take him, but if they see them as being very close and several remain at 12, then a small trade-down would be the way to go. My personal favorite is Emeka Egbuka and I think they can get him later in the first.

I would but they probably won’t.

Can’t see them passing on Jeanty or McM, and one has a decent shot to slip.

They moved down slightly in the first last year and in 2021 which netted them Golston and Bebee. Still got their target.

I’d think longer term and hope to move down significantly for a future first, but I’m sure this is our year yet again according to our GM, so there will be no thinking ahead. Of course no “all in” by conventional definition either. Just nothing. Just make your regular picks and figure they will all be studs.

I am still holding out slim hope, Sanders is there at QB. Browns, Steelers, Dolphins get in a bidding war to move up to select him.
We get a 2026 1st round pick, swap 2025 1st round picks, and we get a few extra 2025 picks, maybe a 3rd and or 4th, and author later round pick. Maybe even a 2nd round, but that could not be from the Steelers, they do not have one.

The premium price for a QB can get those picks.

3 picks in the top 80– or 5 in the top 110?

IMO— I would like us to trade back from 12 to about 18-25 and get an extra 3rd and 4th

I think we can find a starting RB, CB, or WR there, and then you have 4 picks between 44 and 110 to draft some really good players and add some quality to the roster.

The last two drafts have killed us and our depth has walked out the door. I am in favor of adding picks and then packaging some of our later selections and moving back up to grab some sleepers

He's wrong. Trading down is a very good idea.
The difference of picking No. 12 or No. 20 seems greater than having a fourth-round pick or not.
Trading down from 12 to 20 nets out more than a 4th rounder and he knows it.
If the Cowboys are on the clock at No. 12 and there's a chance to move down about 5 spots and there are still 5 guys on their board with first-round grades, then I might consider
There is no IF. There will be. To think the Cowboys could move down 5 spots and there not being a player with a 1st round grade is simply wrong. Teams reach every year. Players get taken early. This year won't be any different.

He seems to think that trading down is about getting a 4th round pick back. It isn't. Not at all. Trading down is just the smartest way of working the draft. The Cowboys just need more picks, period. If you aren't going to participate in FA, you have no other choice but to squeeze every single piece of asset you can from the draft.

yep if they can stand to allow teams to pick two of the top 4 receivers, then grab what is left, then trade down is good way to get that DL or RB with extra pick. WR and CB are pretty much must haves.

I know this had been discussed. But here are a few answers from Nick Eatmam and Kurt Daniels.
They give a few different opinions and explain why about trading down, may not be the thing to do.

Nick explains, it comes down to players on your board with 1st round draft grades.
Exactly what I've been thinking. More picks isn't necessarily going to help if the players you have top grades on aren't there.

People talk about it like it's some kind of magic bullet.

that is a good plan, but I cant see the jones boys doing something like that.
Too complex for them.
