Now that OTAs are over which rookies seemed to stand out from the rest defensively and offensively ?

Nick:
No rookie has put on a shoulder pad yet so it’s still pretty tough for us. But let’s try to have some fun with it. It’s going to be hard to cut defensive tackle Davon Coleman , an undrafted rookie from Arizona State. Watch out for Dashaun Phillips , a cornerback from Tarleton State. This Ronald Patrick , a guard from South Carolina also looks pretty good. As for the drafted guys, DeMarcus Lawrence looks better than I thought he would. Zack Martin is going to be a solid rookie with the chance to be really good.

David: I’m going to get really hyperbolic for a second and say that Terrance Mitchell really showed up in the three days of minicamp he was able to participate in. School obligations kept Mitchell out of the majority of OTAs, but he was everywhere during minicamp – intercepting balls, breaking up passes and just generally being a nuisance. It was pretty impressive that he made such a big mark in such a short amount of time. I also agree with Nick that Zack Martin has looked the part through a handful of non-contact practices.

IM not liking the sound of Martin but im not taking this article with anything but opinion, but Martin wasnt taken that high just to be solid. Great to hear of Mitchell tho. And Cole Beasley they got correct too.

Don't think this was statement on where the cap for Martin is, but this year. And no matter where you draft someone, if you get a solid year out of a rookie, that's really really good.

I don't remember what Nick thought of Lawrence but it sounds like he exceeded his expectations which is encouraging.

That is the problem with the OVER coverage of things anymore. When all you are doing is playing touch football (a little rougher sometimes but that is all) then how do you really know what you are looking at? All you can really tell is if they are mentally getting it as regards play recognition, etc. Nothing really in the physical area which is so important and why many that shine in OTA's and even in camp fade when the real games begin because then they are not up against other rooks and scrubs but the real thing.

Funny I read that in the complete opposite way. To me it sounded like praise and a good thing.

Context means everything in this comment by Nick Whomever.

At this juncture they have run around in shorts. Making predictions is difficult for them. So his ceiling is obscured by the mere fact they are not in pads, he cannot go full blast, and the competition is also in shorts and at this point not one person knows if this defense is going to be meat eaters or a ballet recital filled with squealing six year old girls.

Darn it, Martin was supposed to make the Pro Bowl in shorts...

From what I've read, Martin has been everything that we've expected, with a chance to be really good. Isn't that where Frederick was about this time last season? Martin is a day one starter and will be a cog in the offensive line. Not sure what some in here are thinking. o_O

solid for a rookie at a new position is pretty good. hard for oline guys to show much when they can't hit but i'm not too worried about him. i expect he will have a season similiar to what beard had ast year. which to me was a solid season

Broaddus and Dan Brugler were talking on one of the Cowboys draft shows awhile back that they think he's going to multiple pro-bowls.

If he is solid as a rookie, that's pretty darn good. OL is among the most difficult transitions from college to the pros. Even a guy like Tyron Smith really didn't start to dominate until he had a couple of years under his belt.

I've followed Gamecock football but not closely the last few years. I don't know Patrick. Anyone got any scoop on him?

I mentioned him in the "longshot" thread. Really hope he turns out to be at least a good rotational guy. It would be a nice surprise to hit on another UDFA in a area of need.

I have a good feeling about some of these 7th round guys and UDFA.
Bishop,Coleman ect. ect.
The Cowboys really made that 7th round net work this year, it appears.
