A lot of what is said in defense of Garrett revolves around this concept of the team playing hard for him, players like him and from there we conclude Garrett is a really good coach. But there has to be more than that to retain a coach. We all know what's working against him:
- 2 playoff wins in 8 full seasons
- Longest tenured coach who has not even made it out of the divisional round
- Of coaches employed as long or longer than him, he has the worst winning percentage.
- If you expand that to coaches who have coached 5 or more years, he would be 8th out of 11 (only Rivera, O'Brien and Gruden are worse).
- Of those 11, only he, Gruden and O'Brien have never seen a conference champ game.
- Under his watch, 12 other NFC teams have played in a NFCCG game. The Cowboys are one of four that haven't (Skins, Lions, Bucs and us).
So what's the case for keeping Garrett beyond nebulous claims like the players like him and he works well with Jerry?
The best I can come up with is the Cowboys are near the top in regular season wins the last three seasons.
That seems to be about it.
