Make the case for Garrett's retention

A lot of what is said in defense of Garrett revolves around this concept of the team playing hard for him, players like him and from there we conclude Garrett is a really good coach. But there has to be more than that to retain a coach. We all know what's working against him:

- 2 playoff wins in 8 full seasons
- Longest tenured coach who has not even made it out of the divisional round
- Of coaches employed as long or longer than him, he has the worst winning percentage.
- If you expand that to coaches who have coached 5 or more years, he would be 8th out of 11 (only Rivera, O'Brien and Gruden are worse).
- Of those 11, only he, Gruden and O'Brien have never seen a conference champ game.
- Under his watch, 12 other NFC teams have played in a NFCCG game. The Cowboys are one of four that haven't (Skins, Lions, Bucs and us).

So what's the case for keeping Garrett beyond nebulous claims like the players like him and he works well with Jerry?

The best I can come up with is the Cowboys are near the top in regular season wins the last three seasons.

That seems to be about it.

He's not bad enough to lose and he's not good enough to win.

The 4 remaining coaches are all genius at coaching either offense or defense.

All but McVay have been to a Superbowl.

Garrett has been here long enough. He's had his time. He can only get you so far until you play one of these teams with legit coaches and it's so hard to overcome Jason Garrett.

We are in the Marvin Lewis / Jeff Fisher days with our team and Jerry refuses to break out of it.

It feels stale and it feels like there is no hope or excitement with Garrett.

The best way to describe it.

Has gotten SOOOO much better at clock management
Players play hard for him and genuinely like him
He's a good evaluator of talent

He needs strong coordinators around him to mask his defencencies

Jerry hears our voice through media, especially national. Only national voice out there calling for Jason's head is TO. Not saying I disagree with OP but the reality is it looks like Jason is getting his extension. The best we as can hope and I think could happen, is they force an entirely new staff offensive coaches on him.

That is our only chance with Garrett.

Completely get his hands off of everything football and try to get someone to come in and bring fresh ideas to this offense.

Doesn't matter, Jerry's keeping him. I just hope we get a new OC and QB coach.

Well we dont have alot of losing seasons. 8-8 is not losing... lol

Exactly .........otherwords, not only fire Linehan but clean house on that side of the ball and give new OC blank check to bring in his own people.

...the players play hard for him????

:muttley:
They do play hard for him, and repeat his mantras in the press. The players quit on Wade Phillips and forced Jerry's hand, so don't pretend like the players don't have a collective say. Garrett also knows how to navigate the Jones family, and doesn't compete with Jerry for being the face of the franchise. Until Jerry passes on we are going to need a coach that is okay with that.

Garrett isn't calling plays, and I actually like aggressive Garrett who seems to always go for it on 4th down now. Offense could use a change if it won't be so different as to mess up Dak. He looks like he is turning the corner on what he is seeing out there. Would be a shame to set him back.

3 division wins in the last 5 years ,2 playoff wins, a loss but they played well in all the playoff games and he hasn't lost the locker room or players..we are on the rise not the other way, stop looking at 10 yrs look at now, I saw a big change in his demeanor and the way he got more aggressive late in the year, that shows improvement..thats the best I got bit if he doesnt let SL go and find new QB coach..i wont be sad if he was fired but we dont control that no need to get all sad and angry about it..

he should be fired immediately if he doesnt make big changes, he has to have his eyes open and keep his feelings out of it, the fact that he thought about firing SL mid season should say it all.....
