He does not want any crap about him being a lame duck if he does not extend. A one year extension also allows both him and JJ to walk away fairly easy if next year is bad news. He does not want to coach that many more years ANYWAY, so all in all this does add up.

I think this is a good thing for all parties. I also think that the next head coach of the Cowboys will be on this coaching staff.

I don't know- I tend to think that JJ is more likely to want an established HC.

I think quite a bit of it will depend on Sean Payton...

My hunch is that Payton understands that this is his team in one more year, if things go well. That's nothing more than a baseless hunch though.

I think if SP is going to eventually take over then BP would either step down after '06 OR go into the '07 season letting everyone know that Payton would be the coach in '07. That would be the only way going into the final year of the deal would be acceptable to Jerry as it would allow continuity, not impact free agency, etc.
